If you use bungee to attach all points of a tarp/awning to all points on your rig and stake it down securely, it can handle HUGE winds and it'll cost maybe a 100 bucks for everything.

It takes about 2 minutes to set up. Less if the ground is easy to drive the stakes into.
Its not stored externally though. Tarp stuffs down to slightly larger volume than gallon zip lock.

Arb in _very_ high winds along the continental divide. Above tree line and very exposed. We had it guyed tight and the fabric was tight. But with the constant buffeting from the high winds, the tip of the horizontal pole connecting the van to the Arb's aluminum cross member came out of the cross member. Since there is no velcro strap holding the pole in place for it's final 12" or so, the awning began to flap a LOT and the pole was banging against the cross member. Then the other side popped out as well. Big racket. Rather scary. This happened several times over the course of the evening and into the night until the winds calmed. Yes, we did consider taking the awning down, but decided to simply reset and re tension the pole each time, thinking that taking it down in gale force winds posed more risk of damage ( we'd previously broken the plastic swing arm supports taking it down in a comperable wind) than just reassembling. Happened a total of three times, but at least nothing broke.
I'm now trying to figure out the best way to retain the pole in the cross member even in a big wind.
