My 2000 4runner. Linked, Locked, ADDICTED!

Figured I would post up. I'm Scott. I own a small fab shop in Northern CO where we specialize in Toyota based builds and turn key rigs. This is my personal rig. Its been a 7 month process to get to this point, but its been worth it.

The plan for the build was to create a somewhat "do-it-all" type of rig. The intention of the build was to create a rig that would tow my pop-up trailer anywhere I wanted to go, wheel whatever trail I was at in comfort, and then drive it home. I've built numerous rigs over the years. Most were for the purpose of crawling. While this rig is most definite a very capable rock crawler, its also going to serve double duty as an expo rig as well. I want to explore Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona as much as possible in my free time. The kicker is that I have four kids as well. So, its essentially a short bus of sorts too. :sombrero:

The 4runner started life as a bone stock 2wd 4runner. It had 141K on it when I bought it. I got it for a very good price, and it was the perfect platform for what I was starting.

So, here are some cliff notes of what went into the 4runner.

Drivetrain:
Supercharged 3.4L. 2nd gen TRD Supercharger. A/T to dual gear driven transfer cases. FROR Twin sticks, FROR crossmember. Inchworm pre-runner adapter.

Front axle:
Diamond Axle. 66" Width. passenger drop diff. 9.5" Land Cruiser center section. Toyota IFS hub assemblies. stock 4runner/Tacoma brakes. 30 spline Longfield Superaxles. ARB, 5.29s

Rear axle:
Diamond axle. 64.5" width. Full Floater. 9.5" Land Cruiser center section. 4340 cromoly shafts. Mini truck disc brake rotors/calipers, ARB, 5.29s. cromoly drive flanges.

Front suspension/steering:
Custom Addicted Offroad 3-link front designed and built for understeer for daily driving and rock abuse. 14" Fox reservoir Coilovers. 78-79 F-150/Bronco power steering box. stock Low steer arms. ARP knuckle studs. Chevy 1-ton steering ends and crossover Y-link steering. No need for hydro assist with this steering box.

Rear suspension:
Custom Addicted Offroad Dual Triangulated 4-link. Old Man Emu 851 coils shortened 2" and flattened. 13" BBCS Poly performance shocks.

Gas Tank:
94' Ford F150 gas tank. moved behind the rear axle. 19 gallon tank fits like a glove.

Frame height is 22-5/8" at static ride height. 37x12.5x17 Goodyear MTRs on 17x9 Raceline Renegade 6 wheels. 5" backspacing.

Some of the things I wouldn't compromise on was how it was going to handle on the road. In fact, it was more important than how it would work off-road. Because of that, it handles like a dream. It was very difficult to fit everything under the rig, and make sure it cleared things like the oil pan, frame, gas tank, etc. What made it more difficult was the fact that I wanted the frame height to be only 23". FWIW, I wouldn't change anything I did with the build at all.

I will post some build process pics in a few.

Also the next stage of the build will be to start setting it up for expo use. I have a roof rack for it already, and am starting to work on out fitting it with GPS and Nav capabilities.

Your truck and reputation are top-notch in the Toyota world.
I still hope to own the black 1st gen. you built and sold last year. You should post some pictures of that as well for those who arent familiar with your work.

So, like I mentioned. This 4runner is a complete family hauler.

Its a Jeep YJ rear fold and tumble seat. Its made by Bestop. I bought for around $240 shipped

Here is the roof rack. It was dirt cheap. But, it will do its job. Its not too tall or too wide, so it should work well on the tight trails

Crossmember mock up. I tried 3-4 different designs before setting on this. Its pretty much identical to Booger's. I just didn't like anything else I started.

One thing that I will have to do is move the lower link brackets about 1" closer to center line. The tires rub the links at full turn as they sit right now. I checked it with the numbers and its only a marginal difference in my roll axis #'s.

So, I was able to cycle the suspension. The up travel is going to be a lot less than this after its all said and done. The plan to have around 5-6" of up travel. This is easily 8-9" and everything still clears. Yes, I know there is no panhard yet either. But, it gives me some clarity on where things are at this point. FWIW, there is ZERO binding anywhere in the cycle, and the pinion angle is perfect throughout the cycle as well.

Then I moved the front axle forward 1.75" and tested clearance with a tire installed. Its good by around an inch at the firewall and inner fenders. No issues there, but the front is going to require some trimming.
