Part 18 [The Ride Back to Durango]

All the other backpackers and us waited for the train. The rain showers came and took their last shots at us. The train was late, but it arrived. We loaded our backpacks into the boxcar and boarded our cars.

We were back to Durango before we knew it. We made our way back to our truck and headed northbound out of town.

Part 19 [To Ouray]

We had a room reserved in Ouray that evening. We drove Colorado's Million Dollar Highway to get there. The low hanging clouds loitering around the landscape did not disappoint. It was fairly late by the time we had checked in. We had a warning from the innkeeper that we needed to find dinner soon--before the town shut down for the night. We picked up pizza just before 9:00 p.m. We would have gone hungry if we had waited 10 minutes more.

We had plans to try Mt. Sneffels the next morning. But the forecast called for more rain. None of us had the motivation for a wet pre-dawn start for a chance to try to summit in the rain.

We showered and fell asleep.

Part 20 [The End]

We officially called off our Sneffels plans and drove home the next morning. We drove through scattered rain, thunderstorms, and distant lightning.

And that was our trip. Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for 2024.
