My free but not so free FJ40

Yup, 2F/H55F/34mm Split T-Case. I've set up a half-dozen or so 5spds into FJ40's. While it does take some custom mods, nothing that is too difficult. The biggest hurdle IMO is the park-brake situation. I'd be happy to go into detail if anyone so desires :D
I'd be interested, since I have the same Parking brake issue with the Toy Box. :)

Thanks for the comments and suggestions...

Plans for use:
*Fun in the sun SoCal rig (topless, the fj not me)
*Light expedition/camping use
*Light rock-crawling (I am thinking of 33x9.5 tires eventually) - So no hard core stuff

I was under the impression that the h55f couldn't be done without extensive fabrication/welding/etc.

Also, does anyone know how difficult it is to repair rust on a hard top?
I am still trying to figure out a bunch of this "40" stuff.

Thanks in advance...
:victory:
There aren't many things more fun than cruising in a topless FJ40.

Even if you pack real light an FJ40 will max out with two people and their gear for camping. You might squeeze a small or mid size dog in there. The good news is most of us pack about the same amout of gear for two days as we do for a week.

Unless you go SOA and some gears the rack crawling will be very light indeed. Maybe look at an SM420 or SM465 instead of an H55. With one of those and an auto locker in the rear you can do a lot of fairly technical trails.

If I know Robb, he'll leave everything at home but the dog. :D

That guy would probably drive all the way to Patagonia with only his wife, his dog, his coffee and his surfboard.

Wow, this is great, Robb! :26_7_2:
Congratulations!
Looking forward to seeing your new steed sometime. :victory: (maybe at ExPo Trophy this fall?)

The infamous H55F, as it pertains to an early FJ40 (1 piece t-case equipped thru 8/80')

The H55F will bolt directly to an F/2F/3F block, using a 4spd bellhousing. Some will require some very minor grinding on the index "ears", but overall it is a direct bolt up. Clutch, slave, etc are all the same, the front 1/2 of the H55F is identical to an H41/H42. This is where the similarities stop in regards to an early FJ40. The rear output on the H55F is always a 19 spline. Therein lies the issue. The 1 piece case ONLY has a 10 or 16 spline input gear option. Issue number two is the different bolt patterns between the two. So one is forced to update to a Split Transfer Case if they wish to install the H55F (T-cases found in 80-90' Land Cruisers).

Park Brake Issues:
The Split T-case found behind any US spec 60 series will NOT have a park brake option. Nor will the axle of an early thru 8/80' FJ40 have park brake provisions on the rear axle proper. So you have one of several options, this being the biggest issue in the swap.

1. Park Brake Kit for the Split T-case. Basically uses OEM parts from non-US and late model FJ40 applications to put a park brake drum and backing plate on the donor Split-Case. Parts alone can cost $400-750 and one will have to dismantle the case to install, so a rebuild kit ($200) should be considered.

2. Late model FJ40 or FJ60 Rear axle. My preferred method. Using an 8/80' or later FJ40 axle housing will get you cable actuate park brakes on the drum. Additionally you get bigger better drum brakes and single wheel cylinders that auto-adjust! FJ40 housings can be hard to find, but they are a 100% bolt in. FJ60 rear axles are widely available, but they will need perch/shock mount rework and you will gain ~3" additional WMS - WMS width out of the setup. Good for some, less than ideal for others.

3. Alternative brake setups: Electric or mechanical line-locks (not legal as a p-brake in many states). Rear disc brake upgrade using a caliper with p-brake capabilities (ie Caddy calipers).

Other Conversion Issues:
Driveline lengths need to be changed
Driveline patterns can be an issue
Speedo Cable
Park Brake Cable Length (if p-brake is put on Split T-case)
Crossmember relocation
Transmission crossmember fabrication

Caveats:
Not all H55F's have the input setup for an F series motor, those used behind an H Series diesel will, however those use behind a B series diesel will NOT and will require a new input shaft (~$250)... keep that in mind while shopping.

There are several different H55F's that were made, 85-85 & 85 & later. Differences are minor, its theorized that there may be slightly different ratios in some but I've never found hard proof of that. For reference all of the H55F's I've used were those made to go behind an F/H motor, however I've sold the input shaft to those converting and they did install fine.

Also, there is one tiny tad of evidence of an OEM Toyota 5spd that was mated to a 1 piece case... a single picture in a parts catalog of the combination. I've discussed it with several long time Cruiser experts, none have actually laid eyes upon one. Its possibly a non-US option that existed in the very tail end of the 70's or early, early 80's prior to the invent of the Split Transfer Case. Wow! :yikes:

Kurt, I would like to say a very heartfelt... THANK YOU!

I have been searching to try and figure out a bunch of this transfer-case stuff. It's all very confusing.

Also, regarding the 4spd... I was told the later 4spd, 85+ is the same length as the h55f. Thereby making the swap easier with regards to drivelines, etc. Which would this be? The H41 or H42?

Oh, yeah... I wouldn't expect to see this at the expo trophy this year. My goal is two years.

And KC... :coffeedrink: where's the dog smilie (you hit the nail on the head - good job)

AND... I have something else that will "assist" with the cargo carrying capacity of the FJ40. :peepwall:

All US spec 4 speeds are the H42, that includes the 16 spline version in 70's-8/80' FJ40/55's as well as the 19 spline version used in 80 & later 40's and 60's. The "long" version is still an H42. The H41 is a non-US spec tranny with a lower gear ration, similar to that of the H55F albeit without the 5th gear. You are absolutely correct that the H55F and the "long" H42 are identical in length. I honestly don't know if a "long" H41 was ever made? Outside the US the H55F was becoming the standard, starting in 82'.

Why make the "long" H42?

Good question, I think for two reasons. One, so they could use the same parts (drivelines, etc) as the H55F equipped rigs outside the US. The dummy housing on the back of the H42 is identical to the housing on the H55F that holds the 5th gear. I often wonder how much more it would have cost Toyota to just add the 5th gear and be done with it... considering the complete transmission is ~$1600 (retail), I doubt adding the 5th gear to the US spec 60's could have cost more than a couple hundred.

That brings up a good option though. In several builds we've used the "long" H42/split t-case combo... that way if/when they are ready for the H55F, its 100% bolt in. Lets you do things in stages.

As long as we are exploring ways for blu to spend money what about the NV4500 5spd?

Great tranny, but very hard to pull off behind a 2F. One could likely find an adapter from the 2F to the NV, but your going to add length to your drivetrain. Then the NV4500 is long, add a trans to TC adapter in the mix (~6") and on anything but a 45 or 55 and you've got a short rear driveline!

Now, if you have a SBC or other powerplant, the NV4500 can be an ideal trans. It has a lot higher 5th gear than the H55F, and is literally bullet proof in a Land Cruiser.
