Anak, thanks for the suggestion. Would something like Thompson's water sealer work?

FWIW, autocorrect has a heck of a time with your name! Good thing I double checked!

I expect Thompson's would be better than nothing, but I can't imagine it would add the degree of water resistance that CPES would. That resin really locks things up. Two coats of the resin (with curing time between them) and wherever it went water will not be going. I don't think the Thompson's can seal up end grain like that. It probably works okay on surface grain, but end grain is where you get your wicking issues and subsequent rot. (Note that this also applies to any holes you have made for hardware--again, end grain has been exposed and moisture will work its way in there.)

Grab handle

I used a piece of 1/2" pipe I had from another project to make a grab handle. To get the bend in it, I simply stuck the pipe into the hitch on my pickup and bent it over in a few spots so as not to kink it. Then put the elbows and floor mounts back on and hit it with a quick shot of flat black.

Interior door jam

Well, this door is being a little bit more of a pain than I thought. It seems that solutions breed problems. Here is my attemp to make the door jam/seal. There will be more cursing to come as I try to figure out how to get the door to seal to it. This is made from an old bed frame.
