My "new to me" Buckmaster Knife 184

Last night we went out to dinner with my mom. We got on the subject of knives somehow... and then she told me she had one for me that she found. It was under my dads driver's seat and it scared the heck out of her. She said it reminded her of RAMBO. lol

Anyways, my dad was a hunter and i understood exactly why he had it. The reason why it was under his seat? well, i guess he wanted to kill a carjacker if they tried to take his car? i dont know. I can't ask him, cause he passed away in 2004.

So, she gave it to me, its probably 10 years old and looks like it was used once Boar hunting. I did some research on it and it looks like collectors like these knives because they no longer make them. This is a patented version and its in great shape. Apparently they were tested with the Navy Seals at one time also.

Comes with a Compass and carrying case too. Thing is scary sharp and super heavy. I will keep it here at work in the rig or trailer locked up, probably take it camping with us i guess. It's a little big for my taste but i will treasure it forever. I need to load some matches into the handle still before i store it.

What are the laws on a knife this size in California? I mean, do i need to keep it in the back seat of the rig? Can i carry it on my person? I would think it would be on the illegal side to carry around town. (not that im going too anyways)

Anyways, on with the pics.

It must have been your lucky day. That would be a treasured reminder of good times with your dad.

Too cool Dave, that's a great way to keep the memory of your father! I think that a 4" long blade is the max length for a concealed knife. Reminds me of the Crocodile Dundy scene, "Now this is a KNIFE!!!".

Exactly what I was thinking too:

Very nice knife. Except a bit of surface rust, it looks to be in real good shape.
I found this article about carrying in Kali
http://www.equalccw.com/knifelaw.html

and from what I have read , it is legal to carry visible and on your side a fixed blade and there does not seem to be a length limit.

socal, ram is right...no max length, and you have to have it visible...so expect a little attention in town...

out of town, no worries.

i personally packed a large fixed for a while and got some stares, and became a bit leery standing in line at micky-D's with some hooligan behind me.

thats when i went to a regular buck knife in a sheath on my belt as a back up/utility/everyday knife.

when i camp, i pack a gun, so the folder has worked out fine for me...

just fyi...

pack it on your belt line or backpack to your hearts content. totally legal.

I love those knives, always want one never felt like pay full price. Free and Dads old knife makes it priceless.

I carry a Kabar under my driver sit. If a cop ever asks if you have any weapons on don't forget to tell them about the knife under the sit.

I can remember when those were new LOL. Since you are sure it was your dads you might consider mounting it on a plaque dedicated to him As for carrying in your vehicle attaching to your steering column is better than under the seat you can get to it faster there and it isn't as obvious when you reach for it! What can I say lessons of a mis spent youth!!

Thanks for all the positive feedback and law info. I'll just take it camping with us. I wouldn't want to carry it around town. That just scares me. My personal opinion is that i don't have enough training to use it for protection. In that case it will be most likely used against me in a close range combat situation. Just not something i need to worry about.

I love knives - it is almost a sickness - and that my friend is a $300.00 journey down memory lane.

Have you checked out http://www.buck-184.com/ yet?

Sickness for sure. Im not allowed to go into the knife store anymore. Yeah i saw that site the night i brought it home. Tons of good info there.
