I e-mailed the following to the owner of the Western Reflector:

Dear Sir,

My name is Mark Longfield, call sign KE7IXX.

I am a member of an internet group, ExpeditionPortal.com, that has many new HAM operators scattered around the world. We are a vehicle dependent expedition community, serving adventurers from North, Central and South America. We would like to meet via IRLP on a directed bi-monthly net. Topics would vary from meeting to meeting, but would be related to the responsible use of vehicles in expedition travel or on specific equipment used for expedition/exploration travel. We'd also like to have the opportunity to have a short rag chew at the end of the net so we can meet folks from around the country/world by voice instead of keyboard. Please check our web site for info at www . Expeditionportal . com

After polling our members we've settled on the following criteria:

A bi-monthly meeting held on the first and third week of the month on Tuesday., Start time for the net would be 19:00 PST (or PDST), and it will last for approximately 60 minutes.

Is there an opportunity for us to have time allotted to our group?

Thanks,

Mark Longfield

Guess we'll see what comes of it!

For some reason I feel like I should be sending something like this to my local repeater that I use for the net. An hour seemed like a long time to take over a repeater.
I wonder what the protocol is.

one thing I would recomend to folks regarding their local repeater/node..
most cost are covered by the private repeater owner or a club..it never hurts to email them and ask about sending a small donation. Even if you don't want to join that club at least you are helping to support the resource you are using.

I felt the same way last time we did it. I hopped off after about 30 mins cause of that.

I am lucky because there are a few repeaters in my area that I can access IRLP. During tuesdays net I was connected thru one repeater (actualy Dave activated the IRLP so we shared his connection) - but on my FT8800 dual band I had a second 70cm repeater that I was monitoring on my second band just in case I needed to clear the repeater that we were on. This is a huge benefit of having a dual display on a dual band radio.

...as mentioned above, either join your local club that sponsors the repeater, or make a donation to the same group. I pay membership dues for the local ham club, the Yavapai Amateur Radio Club, and to the Arizona Repeater Association. That totals to a whopping $40.00 a year - or a whole dime a day to use the local and state wide equipment.

I'm bummin' :(

I've received no reply from either the Western Reflector or the Sydney Reflector.

Nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada. Not even a message receipt.

Think I'll get in touch with Joe Ruby and see if he has any tips...
