Hey that's Awesome! I can throw a rock to Maryville College from my house. Go Scots!!!
I lived in a dorm during my first three years, but when Diana and I returned from Germany in '62 we rented 515 Court St, just across from the SW corner of the campus.
Diana had a horse which we kept out on Morganton Rd.
We made numerous dirt road trips into the Chilhowees (Smokies too, for that matter). I remember one in particular out of Tellico Plains—east of there I think. Anyway, I believe it's now part of a Wilderness Area. Wonderful country around there.
We had a close call with a black bear near Gregory Bald on the AT one night. We were in an Adirondack Shack and Diana had taken the precaution of securing our border collie to her leg when we turned in for the night.
This bear came in to camp and all hell broke loose. Bonnie, the dog, was set on protecting Diana and charged the bear. Diana, up by this time, was hopping on one leg while trying to reach down and grab the leash. Mr (or Ms) bear didn't want any part of this growling, barking, creature (the dog, of course) and fled. Bonnie wanted to pursue. Well, you can picture this melee.
Things settled down after a few minutes.
In retrospect it was funny, but then in the middle of the night it was not.
Diana is convinced that I was more intent on getting a photo than I was in protecting her. The fact that I do, indeed, have photos of the ending moments doesn't help my defense.
