New Owner, Old Mog

Hey All,

My wife and I just bought a 416 from a German couple who have been travelling from Germany to Africa to South America to Alaska for the last 9 years. Some of you may have seen the advertisement on All Terrain Trucks. Well anyways we managed to meet a couple times, and worked out a deal that works for everyone. We get a Unimog that is perfectly setup for our travel plans, and they get some cash for it (which they are using to buy a Merc Van now that they are back in Germany!). I don't have many pics right now since we are in the process of doing 9 years worth of tools and parts inventory that came with the rig.

I know this truck was posted in the for sale section a long time ago so you guys are probably familiar with it.

The rig itself has over 341,000kms, the OM352 still runs like a top. They had the cylinder head rebuilt last fall, likely it failed from the old radiator, which was also replaced along with therostat, water pump etc.etc. The mileage is high, but i have service records from the previous owner for the last 9 years showing oil changes every 15K, gearbox and diff oil changes every 40K, rear portal oil changes every 5K and fronts every 10K!

The camper is close to 20 years old, and still looks new. A very well built unit! Especially considering the daily use...

Anyways, this is my first 'Mog, actually the first time seeing one up close, riding driving etc. These things are awesome! A little slow and noisy, but not too different from all the International farm trucks we've had. And way more comfy that sleeping in the RTT on our Landcruiser!

But before we do that I have to finish moving back home from Kamloops, BC and fix the broken wiper motor.

We intend on driving the Mog from Alaska to Argentina next spring; we were supposed to do this trip in the Landcruiser starting on Oct 1, but we are grounded in Edmonton with some family health issues so the trip will have to wait... Should be a walk in the park for this 416

I have seen that camper and it is very nice, congratulations.

If you are going to buy a mog, buying one from a German is the way to go. My camper mog has the exact same story, impeccable service and maintenance and it also runs like a champ.

How heavy is it?

Congratulations on the new purchase, great looking Mog. Who built the camper? Post up more pics when you get a chance.

If you're interested and able, there's a small group of Mogs joining a bunch of Land Rovers for a run through the Whipsaw trail in Princeton. It's taking place the weekend of October 4/5. At least three Mogs are attending, all SBU's. Awesome scenery and a great trail that can easily accommadate the size of the Mogs.

Email me if you'd like more details at pete.lembesis@mattson.com

Cheers,
Pete

Rob,

I haven't had a chance to throw it on a scale yet. Once i get plates that'll be the first place I go :).

Hey Pete,

I can't remember off the top of my head who built the camper, but I do have all the receipts for the truck, so i'll have to dig it up when I see her next week. If i recall it was a bill for about 20K DM.

Princeton sounds great, wish I could make it! I'm in Kamloops this week but out of country that week. I never poked around there when we lived in Kamloops. too bad...

I wanted that rig.. but it just didn't pan out the way i liked... congrats on a sweet rig!! It's a beaut! Very nice to say the least.

Thanks man,

I was just lucky to live in two places where they wanted to go :). If I could've seen a SMB in person the story may have ended differently also :).

Very likely, they spent over 1 year touring the US before doing Western Canada and Alaska! I can only wish to have the experiences they had; it took them 9 years to go from Germany to Alaska.

I think I parked next to that Mog in Bishop California, May 2007.

That is an awesome rig!

Have you guys come up with some new tentative dates for the expedition? We are having some re-scheduling issues ourselves, it would be nice to know if someone else will be heading south at the same time we are.

Cheers!

Well, we're not sure right now. Kinda depends on a few things. I think right now we are leaning towards leaving after wedding season (july '09), that way we can go to Alaska without burning though all our propane in a week :). Otherwise we may go in January, and drive straight down to Cali then slow down and enjoy the ride...

If those are within your plans pm us and we'll compare plans!
