Hello, I am new here and glad to be part of this great place of knowledge.
I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma, SC V6, 5speed, 4x4, extra cab. I have a little Palomino tent trailer that I pull around with my truck.

I have been thinking for some time now to put bigger wheels and tires on my trailer. I finally started yesterday by cutting the fender wells out and making the room for 31's. I have purchased new hubs so the trailer lug pattern and my truck are the same and the wheels will be interchangeable.
Here are some pics of the progress

Next. I just picked up the sheet metal to start forming the inside fender wells.

For my question:
I am planning on going away from the solid axle torsion style suspension and going with a independent swing arm, bagged. I have seen some pics of this done but am wondering how to determine the length of the swing arms and if 1.75 round tubing .120 wall would suffice? Also trying to figure out what shocks and bags to use.
Original axle was rated at 1500lbs although I am sure it didn't weigh that much. I am going with spindles and hubs that are rated at 3000lbs just for safety. I will be adding some weight to that trailer by boxing the frame and adding some exterior protection.

Welcome to the Portal.

If you do a search you'll find a thread on a similar modification done to a pop up. I think it will be a great help.

Dieselheadcruiser designed and made his own trailing arms http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20925 you can learn a lot from that thread as well.

We have a section for homebuilders on our site
http://www.adventuretrailers.com/homebuilder.html where you can get some of the parts you are going to need.

Best of luck with the build. Keep us posted.
