Nissan patrol 3ltr TD in the UK--Carcacha

no more worry about flashing lights on the dash, damaging the lovely cream leather and repair bills in my future

my love of the RR sport TDV6 in my driveway has become a past tence, not wanting to scratch, ding or damage the overly expencive complicated truck, meant its really been no fun to have, no offroad jaunts , suits a guy in a suit rather than timberlands and jeans

So I've jumped back into a Patrol, this will be my fourth one, the previous being a 2.8TD SWB, 4.2Diesel swb and a lwb 4.8petrol.

Being in the UK diesel rules the roost when it come to SUV's the economy is simply required...

2002 model in pretty used condition, worn leather and varied scuff and scratchs from its life.

Steering is wobbly and needs some front bushes done.

Manual 5 speed connected to the 3ltr 4cylinder turbo diesel lump, all seems good in the gear box-engine etc with no smoke and an easy start this morning with zero celcius.

Interior needs some work to clean it up, or simply add seat covers and remove the 13 years of grime

I'd forgotten the feel of a patrol, with its long travel gear change and the power clutch to disconnect the tractor engine under the hood.

This UK model even has a factory rear diflock which is a nice addition, probably never even used, as the underneath has not dents gauges or evidence of offroad use.

tested working yesterday with no issue.

Need to popit in the garage and do a full service, fluid change etc and get the front suspension bushes looked at

Pics to follow....horrible red color, but it was Cheap !

No where did I put that winch and roof rack from my Omani LWB ?

I love trols but sadly a bit to thirsty for me to have as my everyday motor. Nice to see someone else from the UK:wings:

Nice to see some more Patrol threads popping up in this section ... can't wait to see the pics & follow along on the build. We have to live vicariously through the rest of the world (and that RMP&O fella) here in the US, when it comes to the Patrols. Good luck with the build; and it sounds like a few relatively minor issues to sort, lead to a great price for entry.

lyrics

What a cloud of smoke that has us choking
Everybody's asking but nobody knows what it is
An old car comes along honking
With tricycle tires and the motor backwards

I'm waiting over on the corner
Like always, his faithful girl
My girlfriends are laughing
Whispering things about him

Carcacha, step by step
Don't stop coming along
Carcacha, little by little
Don't leave us

Look, girls, I'm not sorry
And I'm not ashamed of my man
Even if he's poor and has a Carcacha
He treats me like a queen, a real man

And even if he has a Carcacha
What matters is that I'm with him
Maybe he's not the best-looking
But he is my faithful boyfriend

I know worthless without pics.....still at the cleaning stage to get the sheep hair and muck out

detergent- Hose- scrubbing brush and a wet vac later....

Outside is still covered in road muck as have a 1000km drivefrom Aberdeen back down to Poole later this week so not worth cleaning

Starting with Engine PORN for you poor US souls with no tractor engines in your SUV............this puppy sounds like Mid size truck with its big 4 cylinders and low revs.....just reving it makes me smile

Its similar in many ways to its cousin the 80 series LC- big heavy relatively slow, but manages to keep up with traffic on the UK motorways but the revs prefer the 60mph A roads, new tires will be going on soon
either 33's or 34's and a small lift

The rusty front shiny thing goes and the winch gets installed in its place, need to jet wash underneath and get the front end bushes looked at - have a wobble at 90mphs ish...and a little bump steer from the flexible old rubber

mmm going by the pic I have a leak in the intercooler....bottom right

big wheel wells waiting for bigger rubber

Lots of space- way bigger than my RR Sport and its sloping rear window

Need to swap this for my 2" reciever

sweeeeeet!! I like it, a lot. The 3L has a bad rep and rightly so. But it is like the 80-series engine and it's rep for head gaskets. The % of failures compared to no failures is small. It is just once the word gets out, everybody labels them as a hand grenade waiting to go off.

I drove a new SWB 3L TD in Bogota back in 2004. It was a manual too. It was really peppy once the lag subsided. Boost would come on and it would get and go nicely. I also drove a buddies LWB 3L in Australia in 2007. In the sand dunes at Stockton Beach. That also had enough power for the bigger truck, even in the sand. It was no v8 but it got the job done. I would personally rather have the 4.2L TD but the 3L I think has a bad rep that is not fully warranted.

Wish we could get them here. Perhaps in a few more years. Panama is full of cheap 4.2L TD Patrols. If I source one some day that will be where from and I will drive it on up to the states.

Cheers and looking forward to what you do with the Pootroll!

Make mine a LHD manual trans 4-door, please ... don't even know if Panama would be LHD or RHD, but I know some places down there would be LHD ... right?

Anyway, I agree ... a lot of these supposedly 'bad engines' (80 Series, Ford 6L, Nissan 3L, etc) are really just a matter of fixing a few key issues; or finding one that has been well maintained, and then continuing that good maintenance.

As internet use grows....all the grumbles come to the surface.....but really I agree the percentage of global sales V's a few engines popping in the outback towing a caravan on sand at 40oC

V's trundling arround the UK and 20oC

If you read forums I think you could pick just about any vehicle and find some issues that occur in each type or model.

Just did a 1400 mile round trip to aberdeen, and ticked over just fine

LHD, there is no RHD countries in the Americas.

$10-15k gets you a nice 10-15yr old low mile TD42 5spd 4-door Patrol in Panama. They are pretty common there under $10k too. Same truck in Australia, 3, 4 even 5+ times the cost!!

I have looked into it, had planned to import a TD42 GQ/Y60 as soon as they turned 25yrs old in 2013. Axed that plan and have settled for Cruisers with v8's. :) Might reconsider a TD42 Patrol some day though, especially when the GU/Y61 becomes importable.

Apologies for the hijack UK4x4.

Cheers

Great looking Patrol! It makes me sad that we aren't allowed to have them here in the US. If I could own a Y61, I would without hesitation.

Nice Y61. A very underrated vehicle here, but highly respected by those who know the vehicle. I currently own a Y60 and owned a 160 before that so the Y61 with a td42 hopefully is the next vehicle.
