We went there (Canol Rd) with my U500 camper probably summer 2008. Got about 5km past NWT border before turning around. Used “donkey” (working) gears.
Was tagging along with a small group of Land Rovers from southern BC, they were trying to get all the way to Norman Wells by floating across Mackenzie R. with floats.
They also ended up turning around.

We met a Mog in Watson Lake (Heidi and Norbert?) that also went a bit into NWT and turned back but I don’t think it was their intention to attempt the entire Canol Heritage Trail. Hiking or biking appears to be the only way through nowadays.

Last I heard the refinery where that pipeline served is for sale.
It seemed like a good deal lf you wanted to operate an old school distillation plant.

A 2022 CBC article reports Imperial Oil declared they intended to continue producing for 5-10 years while developing the reclamation plan for an eventual shutdown.
