One winch or two?

Carry some extra snatch blocks and rigging and learn to winch yourself backwards by anchoring to something in front and behind you. :)

Brain hurts. Can't imagine this.

Somebody draw some lines on this picture.

Reverse winching is absolutely possible with a plethora of gear.

I dont see how it works. I am sure its just because my mind isnt getting it. If you are spooling the winch in then the vehicle would seem to have to move forward on the winch line regardless of how many snatch blocks are on the rear.

If the winch line were moving directly to the side, instead of attaching to an anchor point directly in front, I could see how it would work, but minimally.

For those who know how to do it I would like to see a video of it being done, so that I can learn too.

EDIT: Maybe I am starting to get it, the more I think about it. I would still like to see a video though, it would help out alot.

The tree behind the vehicle is the fixed object, thus the vehicle is getting winched toward that object. The pulley blocks on the side just redirect the direction of the line they are not involved in pulling.

You can do it with less gear if you run the cable under your rig instead of on the side as well.

Correct, assuming you have a clear line path under the mired rig. Its a practice of mechanical advantage and line speed. Free body diagram anyone ;)

The reality is very few will have that much recovery gear for a reverse self recovery. The group I travel with easily could combine our gear to set that up but then again most of them have winches too. The cost of a half dozen plus snatchblocks would be better spent on a quality hand winch that can be use at various angles, side pulls, etc.
