Our Garmin etex Venture HC failed us when we were really counting on it.

My 6-7 year old Etrex Legend had similar issue, a firmware update seemed to solve the problem 100% as its never repeated itself.

Re: Notebook solutions versus handheld options. Everyones uses will be different but after a couple of years expirimenting with the laptop options I went back to the handheld and picked up a the then new Vixta HCx. For the type of uses I often encounter it has served me well. Keep in note I'm not of the 'download & drive' mentality and in fact rarely actually download a track before I set out. Rather I'll enter a handful of key intersections, mine locations, etc and hit the road. With the handheld GPS I can seamlessly exit the vehicle and hike around. Much of my decision came from the fact neither of my vehicles make good platforms for a in cab notebook. In the 40 it would be extremely distracting and take up crucial cab space... in the Tacoma I just can't seem to make it happen without interfering with a passengers comfort. My recent idea was to use my in dash display (roughly 4" x 6" as a screen) for a laptop remotely mounted but in the end I just havn't found the need for mapping more complex than those my HCx can handle (and I actually use the Atlas or other paper maps more than that). I have checked out in cab solutions of others, for example the notebook and mount in Paul May's 100 Series is very workable both in visibility and passenger comfort, that extra cab space makes a huge difference. If I didn't regularly have a passenger things would be different.

I totally agree with most comments here as well. As for a netbook/laptop mount,I have a Jennix one (~$40 on ebay) and it doesn't impinge on my passenger area to much. As I drive solo most times, this is not a real concern.

I do use a track/route that either comes from someone else who has done the trail or from my research as my travels are much more varied than say Kurt's (mostly Utah). Also, the places I go are usually my first visit in the area and coming the distance I do from Kanukistan, I want to be sure to find it rather than driving aimlessly around getting lost.

Conversely, I use all that I have researched and make a tentative plan/routing of where I want to go, so I have an idea of my direction, timing, dates, destination. This has worked for me well as I can leave a copy (GPS file, printout) at home or with friends for family should the unthinkable ever happen.

I'm expecting hate mail from the Garmin zealots now for deviating from the norm...

Do you really? I mean, my friends and I will kid each other about Garmin vs Magellan vs. DeLorme, the same as 9mm vs. .40S&W vs. .45ACP, or Toyota vs. Jeep or Mac vs. Windows or whatever. But "hate mail from Garmin zealots for deviating from the norm"???

You won't catch any grief from me if a netbook solution is the one that best suits your needs. I've been pondering the next laptop/netbook/tablet/GPS/whatever for my Jeep will be, and a netbook might be the best compromise.

To each his own I guess.

Was that intended to be extremely ironic? :D

Thanks for all the responses. The updated software seems to have fixed the problem, although one would think by version 2.9 it should already be fairly robust.
