path clearing

About 8 years ago, an old roommate of mine left behind a What-A-Saw, which looks like a gimmick, took up no space and has virtually no weight. So I threw it in my truck for "just in case". I think it was designed for backpackers. Well, I've cut more wood with that thing than I care to remember. Cleared trails, cut firewood, etc. I've even used it to prune trees. I grab it before my hatchet or axe.

here is a 3 part pic: folded up, unfolding, open for use

now sold under the Coghlans brand: http://www.campingsurvival.com/foldingsaw.html

This is one of my "don't leave home without it" items.

That is sweet. I just ordered one!

I have had one for over 20 years and it has proven itself more times than I can count. It weighs less than a pound and can store anywhere. I highly recommend everyone getting one.

Axe & shovel are never not with me in the Jeep. I almost always carry a folding saw of some sort like a Trailblazer or a manual chain saw.

They are excellent tools to bring along.

The Lewis winch is an interesting item but since I bought a 12K winch for $425 (Canadian) I don't see me ever spending $900 for a chainsaw ad-on that requires you to be face-on to what you're winching. I'll take my long cord (or wireless!) winch controller any day so I can hide.

Path clearing...that brought back a few memories. I can attest to how well the What A Saw works. It is hard to pick out, but we cleared some major downed trees on that trip.

Anybody using a Woodsman's Pal?
Any thoughts on it?

I carry a shovel, Palaski Axe, a saw and a machette/hatchet hybrid thing.

I use to just carry a bow saw, hatchet, and palaski. Now carry a Stihl 025 chainsaw, hatchet and palaski. all three commonly come in use here in the Northwest. the chain saw fits perfect in the bench seat of the FWC.

I carry and Axe and a Sthil chainsaw. The chainsaw really came in handy this spring when we had to clear 4 downed 2-3ft diameter trees to get into our favorite camping spot up on Mt Graham. After a winter snowfall of 18 ft this year they had downed trees all over the place.

Really not very common in most the Arizona areas I travel but I carry the saw for firewood anyway and it's nice to have it there for road clearing if needed.

I just bought a Woodsman's Pal from Lee Valley on the weekend. I briefly tried it out... not too impressed yet. I was trying to cut cross-wise on some sapplings, and it doesn't work well at all. It just doesn't have the heft of an axe. But I really don't think that's what it's made for, and I will need to learn how to use it. I think I need to learn to swing it much faster than an axe. It does cut diagonally through small trees much better than straight across.

Most machete's and light brush clearer's should be used cutting diagonally.

also does it come sharpened ? with a dulled edge.

I recently bought a gator machete- it had a flat burr on the end....the burr made it feel sharp....but did'nt cut a thing.

A short hone later and its fine now !

usually just carry a machete, anything bigger low range and a tow strap !

even here in the desert my machete comes too as a habit
