There's never enough time at the end of the day to tend to all your camera chores. Mhyrvold has interesting things to say about a software utility called Downloader Pro 2.0. It can automate the process of copying photos from flash cards to hard disc for backup purposes.

Downloader Pro 2.0 can handle multiple flash card readers, so you can download all your flash cards at once. For example, if you had three 8GB Compactflash cards, you could attach 3 Compactflash card readers to your computer via a USB hub, and download all the photo files at once.

Downloader Pro can write the image files to multiple external hard discs simultaneously for redundancy. Myhrvold uses a Firewire hub to attach three external hard discs. Downloader Pro writes copies of the day's photos to each disc automatically.

Downloader Pro also has a nifty trick to play with GPS data.

Downloader Pro can be set up to compare the timestamps on your photos to a GPS log to figure out where each photo was taken. Before downloading the flash cards from your camera, you download a log file from a GPS device that records its exact time and location every 15 seconds. One example is the Sony GPS-CS1 ($100). The GPS data is then linked to each photo. Downloader Pro 2.0 also can make a track log that is compatible with Google Earth.
