Picacho SRA - Thanksgiving '10

After lots of reading and input from everyone here, we decided on Picacho for Thanksgiving this year. Just the two of us and the dogs. We headed out after work on Wednesday. With traffic, it was about a six hour drive and we arrived right about midnight. We originally planned to camp at 4-S, but there were already a couple of Jeeps there, so we moved on to the next site which was The Outpost. We set the RTT and went to bed, anxious to check things out in the morning.

The first morning windy and chilly, but the sun was bright and the dogs were happy to warm up in the sand:

It was a beautiful spot, and we very much enjoyed it :)

looks like a nice time with the "family"
I always like the remote feel of that camp area, even though the big RV's are not far away it still feels solitary.
It is a blast to come in from the west on Indian Springs Road or something like that, a dirt short cut from Glamis.

Thanks for posting!

Very cool! Surprised someone was in 4-S.. i've been about 4-5 times and never ran into anyone but once. On the other hand, im glad to see it's still open! It's been on the list of "shutdowns" for quite some time.

Thanks for the report.

We were surprised, too. One of the groups there was from Yuma. He came by our camp a couple of times to visit (drunken wanderings but was cool). He said he's out there a lot and the only times he runs into other people are Thanksgiving and Memorial.

Oops, forgot to include a wildlife shot. Here's a racoon that was not too happy with us. About half the size of the racoons we have at home, but twice as mean:

Where?

You are going to have to enlighten me (happens to me a lot). The only Picacho that I know of is off I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson and no lake. Where is the spot you were at? Is it on the Colorado river?

Yep, along the Colorado, on the CA side. Coords for The Outpost camp are 33° 4'12.33"N 114°41'13.40"W
