Do not be afraid of a bad head gasket, just use it as leverage. If the reciever drier for the AC is up by the battery, you are lucky as the early '93 were R-12 and it cools much better than the R-134 A/C.

Early 93s also could be found with rear drums and no ABS. With lockers, I think you only got a full floater rear, so that would include ABS and rear disk brakes.

The A442 tranny used in the 93-94 model year was used in Hino busses that weighed ~13.6Kg (30K lbs.) and they make a little whining sound in first. That sound is from the extremely strong srtaight cut planetary gear set that was used for first gear reduction. The A343 has a helical cut first gear planetary set, that while quieter, is slightly weaker.

Ask for records of maintenance, too. Personally, for 4500 for a lockered 80 with < 200k would make to my stable with little concern. If it has an obvious head gasket problem, offer 3500 and spend the few hundred to change it yourself. If you know wich end of a screwdriver to pick your ear with, and you can follow instructions (or live close to me), you can change a head gasket.

LOL I know my around a tool box or two. Fixing a head gasket is no problem as long as that is the only problem.

I realized after I reread the article that the motor was not a 3f in the 93. After reading the article I can say that making those tcase mods sounds good as well as replumbing that heater hose. Of course I will already assume that all the rubber will need a good replacing due to age. I will really look over the head and see what is up with that.
