Question on Series II Discovery

Michaels, to use your logic, it can never hurt to use premium fuel. Here's the way I look at it: LR specifies premium unleaded fuel. People have theorized that the lower octane fuels could possibly lead to cylinder head issues. Why take a chance using lower octane fuels, especially when you try to band aid the issue with seafoam? How much do you save per tank? $2? Are you really that tight with your money?

It doesn't make sense to me to save $2 per tank when the downside could be a costly valve job that will not only cost you quite a bit of money, but the aggravation of getting it done and the downtime. IMHO it is penny wise & dollar foolish.

touché. that's what i always thought about filling up with premium versus regular. it only comes out to $2-$5 per tank. i decide at the station what i'm going to use. whether i feel cheap or want to put the good stuff in, it just depends on how i'm feeling that day.

so i agree with you. i'm just saying i didn't see ill effects running strictly regular (when gas was at its peak) for a time of exactly six months and switching back to premium when the price of gas came down to sub-$2.50.

right before i switched back to premium, i seafoamed.

i usually have a mixture of mid-grade and premium. mid is 89 octane here and premium is 93. if i'm not mistaken (and please correct me if i don't remember correctly), the baseline octane for "premium" is 91. so in essence, i have 91 octane in my tank most of the time.
