Questions about lift/tire size on an XJ

Lots of good points here. A lot depends on how big of tires you want and also if the "look" is important to you.

A big lift with big tires is cool, but expensive. If I could do it again, I'd get the full 3.5" RE kit without the Long Arms. I originally had the 5.5" heavy duty long arm kit and it was just TOO big so I swallowed my pride and redid it to 4.5 and I'm happy there as it fits my needs perfectly. It's not enormous, but it still performs sexy as hell flexed out. Don't forget, as mentioned, that the bigger you go, the more extra stuff you need which is expensive...very expensive.

If you're just camping and stuff - go smaller. If you're going to get into the rocks/fast stuff (which since you're here I assume you won't), then go bigger.

my .02c from what little experience I have with mine.

I would recommend trimming your fenders. Right now I'm on stock saggy springs and 31s. Tires only rub the lower control arms at full wheel lock. It will be lifted 3" very soon.

You can use your spacers in the front, but I would say get new leafs for the rear. Lift shackles tend to flatten out your stock leafs and make them wear quicker.

Old Man Emu leafs are arguably the best and come in the 2-3" range. You'll need bushings for them though.

If you stay under 3.5" you shouldn't need to do too much to the drivetrain. Maybe a transfercase drop or axle shims (both easy and cheap).

You may want to look into new lower control arms. Adjustable would be nice if you ever go higher. You will be ok on stock arms up to about 3". Above that and you'll need longer ones.

My goal is 33's on 3" of lift. With my fenders trimmed it should be great once I get a better rear axle and new gears.

I havent got it yet, but Im going to be lifting my XJ with Rusty's 3 inch kit with new leaf packs in the rear. I dont want anything bigger, because I wont be doing anything crazy, just trail riding and camping. Im also planning on stepping up to 31x10.50's after I get the lift.
