Rear winch?

If you had an extra M8000 winch, would you consider it for the rear of an FZJ80?

Scott,
I have an 80 that I wheel quite frequently that I have equipped with a front and rear winch. I use both of them on most outings and see the importance of having them. I have yet to notice any downsides to the rear winch and I am very pleased with having it available.

Scott....you move up here....I'll trade ya one of your M8000 for all the fab work you need to pull from the front to back!

My 60 is in need of a winch......

Thanks, got any pictures of the carrier/bracket underneath? rear-xmember or frame rail mounted? I won't cut through my cross member, but could reasonably run something immediately thereunder.

Winch mount options

I have put this pic up before.
This winch (16.5TI) can be mounted front, rear or "remote", to any spot on the vehicle. When "remote" as pictured, it always 'points' in the direction of pull and the cable does not all finish up on one side of the drum.
Used this way it could even be used between a tree and a rock, only limited by the length of the power cable.

I'm not sure about your climate, but in Canadian winter road workers put that much of a salt and other ice melting reagents on the road, that anything mounted under the truck will be sprayed with all that stuff. I would have a big concern of survivability down there. May be your climate is better for such an aplication. Building a close box for the winch under the body is an option, but need carefull thinking and planning.

Scott, your FZJ80 is heavy, it will easily be pushing the limits of the M8000. I would consider selling it and upgrading to a stronger winch for a rear winch. Otherwise you are looking at adding additional line and pulley blocks, after that is all accounted for you could have just gotten the larger winch.

AlexJet, we're pretty lucky as far as vehicular longevity:

Yes, my LC80 does regularly punch up to the GVWR; I am appalled at the resale value of used winches :( I'd still have to spend another pretty penny to get to a 12k.

Maybe I should ditch my acquisition of PTO parts for the Troopy and put the 8k there?

Scott, it's good. Living in Canada we're not that lucky, but we have allot of snow wheeling... My dream to band salters at all and may be even snow plowers from certain areas.
