Reccomendations for open fire cooking?

STAGE 2

Hey all. I'm looking for some options as far as cooking over an open fire (or fire barrel more accurately). Its for car/cabin camping (or "glamping" as my wife likes to call it:rolleyes: ) Most of the stuff will be eggs, pancakes, and grilling of various meats so ideally what I'd like is an adjustable fire grate of some sort that I can put a griddle on or grill directly. Any thoughts?

There is one made in Australia, but I forget the name of it.
A spike goes into the ground, and it holds up a few levels of cooking surface that you can move back and forth to get coverage from your coals.
I cannot find it with Google, but I am sure its been posted here before.

Very similar but nicer than this one from Cabelas.

I've used tri-pod grills before. great for meat, and easy to put a large skillet on the grill for doing eggs, bacon and such.

Packs up fairly small also.

I do prefer the style Corey posted, as it's multi level, and also keeps the grill level. I've had eggs slide across the tri-pod one, and spread out good.

I bought one of these at the NW Overland Rally. http://www.auspitbbq.com/ The thing is awesome! There was always a crowd around the Auspit fire pit. Very hypmotizing just sitting around a fire staring at food cooking over the fire.

These things are found all over the western states made by various manufactures. They are great EXCEPT - you have to watch out the several surfaces don't get out of balance, which results in their "walking" their ay down the post and dumping dinner in the fire. I have used an old vise grip to help hold things steady.

Keep it simple

Get or make a grill (rectangular of circular) that you can put over your fire ring and coals.
Burn off the grease and put it in a bag for storage.

Use paper plates to save water and make clean up easy.

I use a teflon pan on the coleman stove.

Since you said fire barrel, I'll recommend one of these:

I've used mine (with the legs folded up) dozens of times in my 20 gallon barrel firepan.
If I use it again, I'd probably remove the legs, though.

That's what I use. Get your coals going good and plop this thing right over top of the barrel. To keep it from vibrating and making noise I wrap a small rag towel around it and stow it in the top of a large action packer. It fits perfect, and the towel keeps everything else inside the container clean.

AND it fits perfectly in a paper shopping bag (remember those?).
