Recommendation on 3rd Gen 3.5 vs 3.8 and what year?

They will when the valve seals wear out, but the 3.5l is worse about that than the 3.8l. I have 126k miles (with +1" tires) and have not yet noticed any oil burning. My 01 had 176k miles and just had a slight valve cover leak. Still was not enough to notice between oil changes. Just keep an eye on the level.
