How about you are buy yourself in the middle of nowhere, really hot, the front of your truck is hanging over a 1000 ft cliff. Stranded! You can't get to your front mounted winch. You have a comealong, a few straps, etc and are short by just a few inches using everything you got to make up the length to start your pull.
Thanksfully you have two of these crappy hooks bolted to the rear of your vehicle.

So you un-bolt them off of the back of your truck and bolt them together to hook two straps together instead of choking them or using the method Scott detailed? I don't see how that saves any grace? Where do you hook your recovery strap to if you've removed your tow hooks?

I would never have hooks like that on my vehicle. Those hooks are only rated to 5 tons, so using them for recovery would always be a "matter of life and death".

Ok, here's a real-life, life-or-death scenario:
You're in the middle of nowhere, one of your two trucks is stuck. You've just got things rigged up to pull it out, when some crazy dude appears out of nowhere, with one of those double-hook things. He also has a shotgun. He orders you to use the hook, or take both barrels of the gun.
Now what, guys? I bet now the hook thing isn't looking such a bad idea, huh?
