Register Rock near Leupp, AZ. and Old Oriabi, AZ - 06 Sept 08

PM'd ya Chuck!

After doing some reseach, I thought I'd narrowed down the location of Register Rock to a few locations. I headed up today to do some scouting. There are probably several hundred spots that could be the correct rock outcrop - the area is covered with red sandstone...

Here's a few teaser shots - even if we don't find the exact location, there is lots to see. Beale and his camels actually cleared a road thru the area by hand. The one photo shows a faint trail that on inspection has been in place for a very long time. The other trails in the area tend to meander over the easiest route, this one forged ahead and behind in a fairly straight line.

I'm really sorry, but as of last night the trip is full. Keep a weather eye on the thread - if there is a cancellation, your in. Since we'll be traveling on the Big Res, then heading up to Old Oriabi on Second Mesa and perhaps Hotevilla, I really want to keep the group compact.

Rex, I'm planning on leaving Chino Valley at 07:00 am to allow time for a petrol stop at Little America in Flag. I'll PM you directions to the house, we'll leave from there.

When you leave from the Cosnino exit I assume you will be heading east on the 40. If so tell me where I can meet you so I don't have to drive west to come back east. If we will go north then I will come on over to Cosnino. Also, I plan to camp somewhere around Flag. Sat. evening if anyone is interested.

Carrie and I are planning to camp on saturday night as well. We have not yet decided where to camp. If you don't mind some company we would be interested in seeing some new areas.

We'll be heading out Leupp Road instead of I-40. We'll be stopping at Turkey Tank to check out a portion of the original Beale Road.

Once were done at Hoteville/Oriabi, we'll be heading south to Winslow on 87. Do you know of a good place for chow in Winslow?
