If you have kids (like Me) I would suggest saving up for a JK. (A cherokee is not an option for me...... just because)

x2 on saving up for a JK. We have three kids so that makes 5 of us and the JK was the only logical choice for us. When we purchased it new in March, '08 we had 1 kid in a full seat and two in booster seats. Now we only have 2 in boosters. The kids have always had plenty of room.

There is also plenty of room in the back for the camping gear if you only take the essentials, but plan on packing wall to wall, top to bottom. There is also quite a bit of storage space under the rear seat and that comes in handy.

For the long trips we take I even needed more space so I built a trailer to drag behind the JK. I know there are a few people who complain about a lack of power but even with my trailer it doesn't bother me any; I didn't buy the Jeep to do any racing.

Hope that helps.

I think you are right. I've already put quite a bit of work into her anyway and I really like it a lot! Oh well. I've just always loved the TJ style jeeps and thought maybe I could save some coin.

I had a 2006 LJ Rubicon - it was a great truck, but the extra room wasn't quite enough for my 7yr old and full size dog. the JK unlimited is where it's at - i just couldn't keep up with the payments on my 2008 after 2 cross-country moves :( I'm getting back into a range rover classic now, my 3rd. you don't want to go down the path of roverdom ... it's only for us sickos :victory:

a friend of mine has had 2 different xterras and they've been really good to him. not a bad rig at all. they have a lot of strongpoints and a quirkiness that's highly appealing I think.

cheers,
-ike

In my current situation the back seat is gone .. .mostly because it was impossible for me (very agile and active person) to get in the back seat.... I couldn't imagine loading kids in it.

I really like the new JK 4 door so I test drove it about 3 weeks ago:smiley_drive:.. this one was a rubicon... very impressed with interior, however, and I don't want to piss off any JK owners, that thang was gutless.. no power what so ever.. and horrible gas mileage. STOCK !!! bad choice of motor on Chryslers part.. IMO

Find yourself a lifted 4 door XJ and you'll be happy. XJ=Cherokee .. I have seen them going for around $8K modded, and they will go anywhere with your baby safely in the back seat... plus a ton of storage space in back.

Good luck..

jeep made a vehicle just for you from 1968-1991

its called a full size jeep, wagoneer, grand wagoneer, waggy.

I6 or V8's, auto or stick, full-time or part-time 4 wheel drive. D44 front and rear or AMC 20 rear and d44 front. can carry six if you get the version like mine with two bench seats. you can upgrade the rear seat belts to shoulder belts.

suspension is easy. leaf sprung front and rear axles. there are even body lifts out there.

i just bought one for $500. its a 78' with only 72K Miles. Never used off road, perfect interior.

they don't get the best mileage. but you can haul a lot of stuff very comfortably.

my JK got a reliable 18-21mpg on the highway; about 12~16 in town. ymmv edit: it is kind of gutless, but with the 6sp it was tolerable.

Why not a CJ8 (Scrambler). Sometimes you can find them in that range in good condition. It's not as modern, but you don't have long commutes you said.

You can get them with a full top as well as the half cab, and they're longer than the LJ's. You also have a lot more room behind the rear seat.

...just something to think about
