So, I had wanted to have the top open from one side, but I want to make a rack that I can push up for a cvt tent and annex so I am thinking of having the lid hinged in the front to make it easier to build a rack that is not in the way of the top when it is opened. If I have the trailer lid open on the side the rack would need to have the leggs on the front and back, if I hinge it in the front I can put the legs on the sides. So anyway I am looking for some input on what everyone thinks.

Anybody have a opinion on what way is better for the trailer lid to open. hinged in front or side?

I think hinged on the driver side opening up to the passenger side... For safety in case you pull over on the side of the road your back won't be to traffice

I would agree with this location if you choose the side opening approach. Don't want anyone run over.

On the other hand I think that with a tailgate you may put less stress on the trailer if it is hinged at the front and opens from the rear. You could put 2 latches either side of the tailgate.

I agree about the tailgate. I like how your tailgate is wide like that but I don't think there is enough structural integrity to handle the load of a side lifting lid.

For my tailgate I was planning on making it a bit smaller so I can make a "rectangular box" on each side with each corner gusseted to handle the lateral load when lifting a side mounted lid

IMG_0055[1].jpg Added a gasket made grom cutting up a Caravan hatch gasket. Not sure if I like it or how it came out. It seems to high and thick.

Did you decide how to hinge the top? How will it work with a rack over it, maybe I missed something on your thread!

Nice lid. I used a gasket that was about that thick and is seals REALLY TIGHT. Sometimes hard to break it loose.
