Scored a Gen I SWB!

After a long and fruitless search, I found a SWB Gen 1 and scooped it up as fast as I could get to the seller. She's a V-6 5 Speed with some dents and "character", but seems to be very complete and solid. Everything works except for the AC, and it does smoke a bit.

I put in a new air cleaner, cleaned the throttle body, and put some fresh plugs in it. Next oil change it will get all fluids.

I'm not even sure what direction I want to go with this, but am looking forward to this new project. I do some local rough wheelin', but hate to beat this up since it's so rare in this region. If I do use it for that, it's going to get a winch, sliders, locker and some bigger tires.

Funny how I remember my 89 LWB as being more "modern" in the day. This feels pretty old school after driving progressively more modern SUVs over the last 19 years!

Nice! maybe do a mild trail build for it to keep it clean and capable, get some sliders, SR rear axle and some 33's. It'll have great clearance and enough power for the job without needing a regear plus you'll be far from the breaking things realm offroad even under severe conditions.

Thanks Toasty, that's about along the lines that I was thinking. I was thinking 33's, and from what I read I shouldn't need a lift to mount them if I stay with a 10.50. The axle swap seems a little daunting, but I have a buddy that lives for swapping axles, so maybe that's the route I go. In TN, there aren't a lot of Monteros, so hopefully I can find an SR to salvage. I'd love to find a "bouncy' driver's seat as well. Had one in my LWB and loved that thing.

The SR axle swap is a cake walk on the 5 speed, ge1 one from a 95-96 and it is a bolt on deal for the most part. The 94 has a weird pinion flange, no big deal but it is one more thing to do.

Looks great . I'm envious . I lived in Nashville . Visited Chattanooga every time I had a chance. As close to heaven as I think you can get. There was a park with an indoor carousel I remember . Have fun with it it looks like a keeper.

Do you know if any of the standard baseline stuff has been done recently, such as oxygen sensor, ignition system overhaul, etc? All super easy, and pretty inexpensive for the most part - often these are the things that make you fail, even though they like to point at the catalytic converter as a usual culprit (but that's because they get to charge you more $$$$). The truck will run a lot better afterwards as well.

Very little knowledge of what's been replaced. I replaced the plugs and air filter Saturday, and they were pretty rough, so I doubt much else had been done. The county it came from didn't require emissions testing, so they wouldn't have been replacing those. I "barely" failed the hydrocarbons, so I am running some IPA in the gas, Seafoaming the intake and vacuum lines, and changing the oil. I'll also run it hard before taking it back to make sure it's really warmed up

This thing had been sitting quite a bit, so maybe just a fluids flush and intake cleaning will push it across the line :victory:

Wow, the Seafoam/Rubbing Alcohol/Oil change really worked! Passed with flying colors! Dropped the HC by almost 400 ppm, dropped the CO by 1.1 (whatever units they are).

While I had it in for an oil change, I had them change the fluids on differentials, transmission oil, and transfer case. Wow, could I tell a difference! I'm guessing having never been changed with sitting for a few years it must have turned to sludge.

Now to get some seat belt parts (the ones that bolt to the floor with the release buttons), new back sliding window and some rubber under it!

Nice, I just got an '89 Raider (3.0 V6 MT) and was thinking about seafoaming it. Where did you insert it? I am also doing all those fluids too. Hopefully I get the same results!
