Scored a Gen I SWB!

Wow, the Seafoam/Rubbing Alcohol/Oil change really worked! Passed with flying colors! Dropped the HC by almost 400 ppm, dropped the CO by 1.1 (whatever units they are).

While I had it in for an oil change, I had them change the fluids on differentials, transmission oil, and transfer case. Wow, could I tell a difference! I'm guessing having never been changed with sitting for a few years it must have turned to sludge.

Now to get some seat belt parts (the ones that bolt to the floor with the release buttons), new back sliding window and some rubber under it!

Too bad that worked.....;)

Probably biggest difference there was oil change. You probably had very diluted engine oil, means that the pcv was basically pulling fuel vapor in.

I'd bet it was the rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol makes the fuel tank condensation miscible with gas and when It makes it up to the combustion chamber it turns to steam in the combustion process. Its similar to water injection.

I do it all the time here in California with my older cars. 1/4 tank of fuel, 1 pint of 90% rubbing alcohol=pass the smog test.

Very nice find Octotat! I had a red one just like it with the V6 and 5sp, but no roof rack. I'm with you, I think I would not molest this VERY rare SUV. I just scored a Gen II LS one-owner that is in incredible original condition and I plan to keep it, so no major changes other than tires, shocks, stereo...I even keep it garaged! As you know, you can still get it off road for some lite to moderate wheeling without destroying the originality. Enjoy!

A couple of issues I really need to take care of on this one. I'm getting a ton of heat coming in through the firewall, and it's really reeks of engine compartment fumes in the cabin:smilies27. Also, the passenger side back window is smashed and needs to be replaced.

After I get those issues resolved, I'm planning the following upgrades, in the order listed:

32 x 10.50 MT
Rock Sliders
Locker (recommendations?)
Bumper upgrades, winch and lighting.

I haven't had much of a chance to tinker other than getting it cleaned up to pass emissions, but the next few weeks I should have some more time. Let the fun begin!

Nice, I just got an '89 Raider (3.0 V6 MT) and was thinking about seafoaming it. Where did you insert it?

Remove the brake booster hose where it meets the round can behind the master cylinder. Tape a short piece of thinner hose to the end. Start the truck and have someone rev it up and keep it from dying while you slowly allow the vacuum to suck up Seafoam from the can a bit at a time, but don't allow the engine to die. Get about half to 3/4 of a can in it and you will see smoke. Lots and lots of smoke. Key the engine off, reconnect the brake booster line and let it sit for a half hour, then restart it and drive it hard immediately. You will see smoke, again, lots and lots of it, for a couple of miles before it clears up.

Before that all happens, remove the air intake hose just before the throttle body and spray into the body with throttle body and intake cleaner (not carb cleaner; it's different somehow). I'd advise cleaning around the throttle plate with the engine off, wiping it up and then start it and spray some more in. Don't go spraying a whole can, use just enough to get things wet. Bonus points if you remove the idle air control just below the throttle plate, carefully clean up the tip of it and spray and clean the same stuff where that part fits in.

You want to try to find the entire axle, including the disc brakes, springs and trailing arms from a 95 or 96 SR. Also grab the driveshaft in case you need the mating surface where they meet up. Get the air pump, too. Strongest, least expensive upgrade you will ever find.

Not many Monteros in these parts, I'll be on lookout though

I know your post is old but are you still looking for a driver's side bouncy ("Spring Tension"...really? What a boring name!) seat?
