Screwing around with a Eurovan!

Well darn it! The van developed a knock today. No idea what it is yet. Abandoned it and need to get the trailer to go get it!

Why can't I ever do this crap when its 70* and sunny?

Of course the engine sounded fine when I pulled it on and off the trailer:Wow1:

I'll look at it later....after the snow storm!

(notice the flat trailer tire!......that was fun to fix in the snow too:snorkel:)

Well, the good news is that I distracted my wife with updating our magazine website long enough to get out and check out the van. :) (you can check that out if you like www.MotumMagazine.com)

That is about where the good news ends.:coffeedrink:

I fully molested the van with a stethoscope. Poked and prodded it in all sorts of inappropriate places and it sounds like its "probably" a rod knock. Is there, but too light to pinpoint exactly. So the next stage is to drop the pan and take a look. (Actually the next stage is still to fix the 951 so that I can work on the van inside. :smiley_drive:

Anyone have a good source for rod bearings if it happens to be that simple of a fix?

Sorry about your van. I was raised camping in a old school VW van, and then a Westy. Thanks to my grandfather. I guess that's what gave me the van bug.

It has to be said, that, even with a fault, and on a trailer, (with a flat tire), in a snow storm, your van sure does look good!

One of the nicest VW's I've seen.

Good luck with the fix.

These is one of these precious, spiced with the right amount of pictures, very inspirational, easy to read threads. Keep up the good work with your van and the thread, and congrats to you and your wife for the baby.

Thanks to both of you!! The kind words will help stay motivated to go fix the van and just move on.

My 3 week old daughter has not been able to enjoy it yet....so its worth slaving away in the garage to fix it.:sombrero:

hmm..unless im blind and something got loose..

could it be valve related?

this thing has a timing chain right?

Cole

Has a brand new timing chain, tensioners (both), guides.

Noise is at the bottom of the motor when you put a stethoscope on it, not where the chain is at the end of the block

Definitely a solid metal "knock" noise, not a rattle or slapping of a chain type noise.
