Seattle area suggestions

It's a bit bulky to take on the plane, but I make most use of a DeLORME or Benchmark Atlas. I also like Moon guidebooks. If you need every street labelled, a Thomas guide for the major counties is best. I can't think of an obvious map that fits between the the detail of these, and generality of the state map. I still make use of state issued maps to plan routes using state highways, and even to identify major county and forest service roads. Such roads typically are marked but not labelled.

Hopefully we can have a meet-n-greet too. :) The wedding I'm attending ends Sunday night (8/12) and then I'm starting my exploration via rental car until my flight out of Seattle the 18th.

I know it's too early to plan it now, but I'd like to have a meet-n-greet too. Keep us posted as the trip gets closer so we can try to plan something.

Update to this old thread. I had a great trip to the PNW, thanks for all the advice. I was not able to have a meet-n-greet, sorry about that. I should have made time. I ended up camping out of my rental car exploring mostly the Olympic NP. The whole area is damn amazing. :yikes:

Here is what all I did.

Ballard Locks, attended my friend's wedding on Aug 12th, went kayaking in the San Juan Islands out of Anacortes, hiked the Dungeness spit near Sequim, Rialto beach, Hoh Rainforest, Makah Tribal museum, Cape Flattery, Hurricane Ridge, Olympic Hot Springs, and Mt Ranier on the last full day. I put a few pics online.

I also moved this thread to the completed trips forum.

So it was Kari who got married?! To the guy she got in a big fight with as they pulled into the jewelry store to pick up the engagement ring?! Ahhh, young love....

One thing that is a must in Seattle if you like good food is a little place called Salumi. The most amazing sandwiches ever. Just look for the block long line to get lunch.

Other than that anything in the National Park is well worth seeing. The backcountry roads leading from Hurricane Ridge are incredible.
