Servicing the 200tdi and Lt77

Why are you guys using a low weight synth oil for such an old engine?

LR recomend 15/40 for TDi and synth for TD5. I have always thought older motors need a higher weight oil (Like classics using 20/40) so It does not seem to make sense to go the opposite way.

Am I missing something?

Be interested to hear your thoughts as my 300 is due its service :)

It is not an old motor. I tis quite a modern diesel design.

All XW40 is the same weight when running. The first number is only the viscosity when cold.

It is an old motor. The Gemini (200Tdi) was designed back in the early to mid 80's but is simply a reworked head with direct injection on a strengthened 2.5NAD diesel, which itself comes form the 2.25 oil burner

You want 10w40 in the winter and 15W40 in the summer (allowing for climate extremes) and stick with a semi synthetic. Changes are every 3k miles for hard work in dirty conditions and every 5k miles for easy work and clean conditions.

The 200Tdi is a 'wet' engine. It uses oil. It burns it and it weeps it - fact. Live with it; it's still the best engine ever fitted to any Land Rover product. Back in the day, dealers would only worry if the engine used in excess of 2 litres of oil every 1k miles!

Turbo is a Garrett

Watch core plugs. Less chance of overheating than a 300 as the 200 has a bigger water jacket.

200's eat injectors for lunch. Recon at 60K. Injectors are no longer available new in the UK. Option is to fit a 300 Tdi head and rocker gear to the 200, along with 300 injectors

BS. I have one. It does not use oil. It does not leak oil. The oil analysis is as good as any modern engine, running synthetic 5W-40. 16000 km changes are conservative based on this analysis.

Injector nozzles are easy to find and replace. You do not need the whole injector.

Red, what type of filter are you running?
I have been lazy about getting an analysis of my own but I'm curious. I'm sold on 5w-40 after our discussion on d-90source and other reading on synthetic for tdi's.

I burn a little oil, no leaks though (well, maybe one new one). Less than a liter every 4k mi. Far less than my VW.

Anyone install a provent?

Marvellous, on Red90's post, I have e-mailed Land Rover. They are very grateful for the up date and have recalled all the dealer bulletins covering the 200Tdi and it's oil consumption; covering the years '89 to '93. They are also grateful for the new input on oil degradation and are going to change their whole EU and RoW service schedules. :)

I do so love experts :wings:

Oil filter? Just a quality PH-8A equivalent. That should not affect oil life as the main filters do not capture soot. A secondary filter would allow longer intervals as soot is the limit. I do not drive mine anywhere near enough to need long intervals.

I do have a 2 micron fuel filter (Stanadyne FM-100). That should help a lot with nozzle life. The FM-100 bolts straight up to the stock mounts. A couple of compression fittings and the job is done.

With regard to oil degradation... Oils available in 2010 are not oils that were available in 1989 when the engine came out. A modern synthetic diesel engine oil will never degrade within the intervals any of us will run. Soot levels set the maximum allowable intervals. This is easily checked with analysis.

Actually Red 90 is right on the money here.

Best oil for this engine (if price is not a consideration) is actually full synthetic 0w40.

If you keep the air filter clean (to prevent dust contamination via the combustion chamber), use clean fuel (for the same reason), and have a good quality oil filter, the safe oil change interval on a fully PAO synthetic is greater than 15,000 miles - assuming the engine is in good working order.

You are in the UK, so go for the tour at the Woking facility of Maclaren, and ask the technical guys about 0-weight oils and synthetic drain intervals during the Q&A. You will get a much different answer than the guy at your local garage will give you.

can someone tell me why the hell it costs $15K US to have a diesel engine ( 300tdi ) and R380 installed???

shouldn't it be about $5K-8K tops

I understand some fitting perhaps but come on, $15 large? it's not German or a Shelby :)

Two possibilities

One: You are paying for your crimes

Two: You have allowed yourselves to become caught in a captive market
