I think the H3 Alpha is definitely a competitor to the Wrangler Unlimited. Sure, it doesn't have the 6-speed transmission as an option, but it does have the power of the V8. It also has the 4:1 transfer case and the same gearing in the diffs. It has traction control that will also assist the front when the rear locker is engaged. And the 2009 model has added the locker to the front.

About the only main difference other than those listed would be the independent vs. solid axle in the front. But for what we do with vehicles, I don't think this matters much at all, unless you want to give the nod to the Hummer for better on-road manners getting you to and from your destination.

Now, if you meant a competitor to the shorter wheelbase Wrangler, well, that's probably a different story. But for expedition travel, I think the slightly longer vehicles are a better fit anyway.

Yes, the H3 could be compared in certain aspects, but the IFS limits it in terms of off road capability. And you can't pull the top off. I was discussing overall competition, not just the expo side. The torsion bar/spring under leaf spring H3 cannot compete with the JK IMHO. My pic would still be the JK, and I've driven both. Gotta salute the power of that Alpha though......

Well, I've been looking into both recently as well. If you could give me the power, comfort, and the sunroof of the H3 with the trail visibility, the suspension, and the cargo capacity of the JK, then I'd think you'd really have a winner.

Oh, and you'd have to update the automatic transmission in either vehicle...seriously, why can't they put in a good 5-speed A/T? Both of those 4-speeds leave the driver wanting more. So, if you can't get a good A/T, then I guess you'd be better off with the 6-speed manual that the JK offers as well.

Unfortunately, It's not just Hummer losing its heiny. Fullerton Dodge close its doors several weeks ago, and my girlfriends Dad was given a pay-cut instead of being laid off. He's a parts manager at a good size Buick/Pontiac/GMC dealer.

Towbin, the company that owned the Hummer franchise in Las Vegas, has announced that they will start selling Smart cars and scooters in place of the big SUVs.

Another large bit of bad news...GMAC is pretty much tanking, my folks neighbor is a big shot with GMAC and he's been wearing Jeans and not going to work much lately. That can't bode well for Gm in general eh.
