Silly or OK?

Thanks guys, it surely does hurt the departure angle. I could make some hinges out of some bar stock and a spring so it doesn't clang along but I really only ever pound pavement and dirt roads. Insurance in Canada isn't really concerned with such things for good or bad I don't know. I think I'm suffering from Discovery 2 envy, saw one in that light green with tan interior at dealership in march . When I bought mine I found three colour choices, black on black or black on black and even a really nice black on black. Its a good car though and can't buy parts I want so get to weld them :)

the bar going around was supposed to match the rock sliders i made but it somehow doesn't on photos. Tough part is everything mounts to factory bolts so had to twist things around within those limits. One day I'm likely to sell and surely new buyer will want to drive it on bumpstops with 24" or god knows rims on it so the off road stuff will be gone.

Like the sliders and rear bar, but that is going drag heavily possibly bending the whole bar and impacting the rear bumper. Having a hitch on he back of an LR3 can drag quickly on anything steep. Even though you say you run on dirt roads, before you know it, you may be challenging bigger obstacles or need the extra clearance to bypass something. The idea of making it fold up like the old disco steps would be great. But since you have a tailgate, why do you need a step? Just step on the tailgate. I did that for a long time before I bought my ladder.
