I had a really nice Jeep, ..... but was pulling my Chaser up the Million-Dollar Highway into Ouray in September and got passed by a Canadian tour bus! I thought to my self, "Self, this is stupid!"....

Funny, me too!!

Slight modification, problem solved: :ylsmoke:

The good news is that my wife is looking to replace her Grand Cherokee soon and I have her halfway convinced to get a TE 4Runner.

Have you thought about replacing the Grand Cherokee with a new Grand Cherokee with the diesel option? Might be another good alternative to the 4 Runner.

Interesting. So I've done very little internet shopping but which model? Sr5 or limited?

Limited's have leather seats and a better sound system, which I suppose is a plus if that's what you want (I don't like leather seats, personally.) Every limited I've seen has a sunroof, again, if that's what you want. Keep in mind that suroofs sometimes rattle or leak, again, not my cup of tea but a lot of people like them.

Many limiteds also have air suspension, which, if I understand, has to be removed if you're going to put in a lift.

My personal opinion is, if you want a mall crawler for your wife, get the limited and leave it as-is. If you're planning on going off road and will be modifying it, get an SR5, that way you aren't paying for things like a suspension or stereo system that you're likely to replace anyway. Limiteds are noticeably more expensive on the used market, as are Sport models (the ones with the hood scoop.)

As far as the sport, yes, the hood scoop looks **************', but they also have the X-REAS suspension that will need to be removed if you're doing anything other than a very mild lift. :ylsmoke:

Sweet thanks Martin. I've been browsin last nite and noticed a lot of them don't have manual transfer case. How's the lil knob holdup if anyone knows. Sure would miss that shifter

I have heard a lot of stories of Jeep reliability. I knew someone that had a JK with 60K miles tranny breaking down. Ultimatelyv they also got a 3rd gen 4runner. Though I personally like the JK's design wish they had toyota performance and durability.

Nicely done on the HEMI! I was about three minutes away from calling AEV, but the JK was paid for, Toyota gave me a stupid high trade in allowance, and we needed a truck so we could do some work around our new house. We've test driven both the new Cherokee with the diesel option and the TE 4Runner and the wife liked the 4Runner much better. Happy wife, happy life - right? In this case I am the clear winner because when she gets tired of it in 5 or 6 years and she wants something new I will be able to assume a barely used 4Runner that I know has had an easy, well-maintained life and turn it into my dream vehicle (Cue maniacal laugh!). She doesn't even suspect that I am setting her up to drive what I really wanted! (Unless she reads this forum too and that would be awesome!)

So how was the "seat of the pants" power in the Cherokee with the diesel? 420 ft-lbs of torque sure looks good on paper.

I was a bit misleading, by we I meant her. She test drove one with her Dad while I was out of town on business. I basically asked her the same questions and I got "It was really quiet" for the answer. Apparently the salesman made her nervous, so she drove like a granny. I test drove the 4Runner alone with her and I really enjoyed the driving position, cabin layout, and solid construction of the truck. The doors made a solid thunk when I shut them versus my Jeep, which sounded like tin flapping in the wind when I shut the doors.

The only drawback that I see to the Cherokee is the four-wheel independent suspension with the air ride. I am very hesitant to have something like that because I tend to be a late adopter of vehicle technology when it concerns hard-parts and I envision that the purchase will become mine after a few years, so I like the suspension better on the 4Runner. I know that Scott Brady and some of the other guys at Overland Journal are running Land Rovers and similar vehicles with great effects, and they spend much more time in the dirt than we do, but it still makes me a little nervous to offroad an airbag suspension.
