Well, the annual ARRL Field Day is being held next month on the 26th and 27th.....What are you doin'?
Cuz, if you don't have anything planned at this point....you're just lame! Or, maybe you're just "mikeshy"....whatever, get over it!

Seriously, next month a group of local froaders is putting on a Field Day. Cruiserlarry has placed a post in this section that'll lead you to us.
If you've never worked HF and are curious....this would be the simplest way to get your feet wet and possibly learn a few things. The ARRL has engineered this event to be as complicated or as casual as anyone would want to make it...This'll be the first of what will hopefully be an annual event and,....we're definitely opting for casual. At the radio, it's pretty much a scripted affair with a quick verbal info exchange taking place between stations all over the North American continent.....We're going to try to make as many contacts as we can while giving everyone a chance to contribute as they see fit.
We're going to concentrate on true field operations in a way that would suit the offroad/overland traveler. It looks like we'll have 5-6 stations/bands operating under a number of different field deployable antenna options. Different source power methods will be demonstrated as well....battery, wind, gas generator, etc.
If you can make it for the whole event....great. If not, come up on that Saturday and check it out.

Hmmmm, I might be able to swing by after the Land Cruiser Swap Meet on Sat, June 26 at the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.

Are there directions or anything? I am not sure I can stay overnight, but I would love to stop by for the day. What time will things be starting on Sat? How much if I just hang out for the day?

Thanks

The OAUSA Summerfest Event runs the entire weekend. The Field Day portion of the event runs from 1800 UTC (11am) Saturday through 2059 UTC (1:59 pm) on Sunday. I don't think you'd be required to pay anything for just visiting the Field Day functions at Coon Creek for the day. There are multiple "Yellow Post" campsites nearby as well as standard campgrounds within a few miles. You would be required to pay if you camp directly at Coon Creek Group Camp or plan on participating in the Summerfest activities....trail runs, hikes, potluck, etc.
Directions can be found here: http://www.oausa.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=145&t=1859

The talk-in frequency will be the Keller Peak repeater @ 146.385+ 146.2 PL

Do you know where the Heartbar campground is with all of the yellow posts sites off HWY 38? When you pull off the highway you go past the paid parking lot camping. The road turns to dirt and you just take it all the way to the end. I think there's one fork in the road and you take the left branch.

Great thanks. I hope I can make it, I will be monitoring the frequency even if I cant..haha

Most of the stations operating will be on HF. We will have 15, 20, 40 and 80 meter stations. We will only be using FM (2m) for local "talk-in" and trail run coordination. If you've never tried HF this would be a great opportunity to see how much more effective it is for distance communication.
If you can't make it, we'll be in the General segments of the these hf bands. Our current club callsign is KI6ZQL, but we have applied (weeks ago) for another....K6OAU, and have our fingers crossed it will post in time for the event. If you can't make it, listen for us and chime in.
