Hey guys, been a lurker for awhile and wanted to finally show my 4runner build. Seriously appreciate the people contributing to this forum for all the unique ideas and real world experience in overlanding.
I recently decided to give up my Los Angeles life and apartment in exchange for some adventure. I have been working for sometime to make it possible to not be confined to a city because of my job, and finally have the opportunity to start that dream. With my girlfriend, I convinced my brother (a cinematographer) to come along as well and record the adventure.

I'm pretty familiar with toyotas being that I previously owned a 1998 5spd 4x4 4runner so I definitely was looking for something similar. I currently also own a 2014 evo x that I was planning on trading in for a 5th gen, but I couldn't see the logic in getting to the places I wanted to get too and scratching up a new car and parts are pretty pricey!
Since the 4th gen didn't come in manual, it was definitely another 3rd gen for me. I really wanted the oem e locker being that I got in a lot of situations with the previous one where I wish I had it.
After 2 months searching and going thru a ton of junk rusted 4runners I finally found a rare 1999 5speed diff locked 4runner. Almost settled with a trd tacoma but the double cab doesn't come in manual and the regular is so small for 2 people and a german shepherd!
Here's the car when I bought it. Seriously had 270k miles but ran so smooth and had a stack of reciepts plus a 5 page carfax record showing routine maintenance. no rust and a dessert truck. Interior is Mint.

The EVO
Removed the plastidip on the front bumper and added some hella 700ff to the bumper. Can't stand plastidip. Also added a custom roof rack designed by @outgearsolutions. Really awesome guy and can do custom work as well! Powder coated it semi gloss black. Forgot to mention that the 99 coils have held up nicely and the shocks have been replaced recently with napa parts. It'll do for the kind of wheeling I want to do right now.
Did the spark plugs, wires, filter, synthetic oil change, mt90 fluid change, synthetic diff fluid change, lower ball joints, and replaced any broken or missing interior pieces. Will post interior shots soon! Added Glass clear headlights as well.
Removed the trd sticker and added the original grille and some 700ff hellas for the top! Also sold the black blade wheels for trd tacoma wheels or tundra wheels. Viper alarm system and changed the entire sound system as well. I just wanted something nice for long road trips!
Added a water and gas rotopax for the time being. To be honest I can't stand the gas rotopax. Seriously went to big bear and drove down and it bubbled. Given rotopax will replace it but I don't see the point if it'll happen again. Stick to jerry cans.
The water one is extremely convenient for camping and water for our pup, would recommend to anyone!

Went to visit where i grew up in Houston, Texas and picked up some 5 star 4runner wheels and some brand new 265/75/16 k02's. Fantastic tires. Also really important, the purpose i bought the hella 700ff is because I wanted the classic safari look of a 90s truck but the power of an LED Bar. SO, that called for a rewiring of all the lights and I did the HID Conversion 4700k so it's still white light but THEY ARE BRIGHT. There's a youtube on the conversion and it's extremely simple. Also added 01-02 tailights.
So here's a video we did at imogene pass. Ended up doing it with my stock 4runner. Super simple pass, my dad had a rented 4x4 armada he did it in.

Went through a lot of changes here, Removed the rear bumper and ended up taking a trip to Bend Oregon and becoming an ambassador for free spirit recreation. Highly recommend their tents along with the fact they're awesome people. Check out their FSR Go Light also, I didn't know how valuable it was till we started using them in our productions and around the camp sites! Also thanks to MJT 4runner grilles for supplying the rig with an awesome satoshi Grille! Also that's my brother's XJ.
