Final installment of my trip report: (sorry about the image quality.. a lot of cell phone pics in this one)
Woke up to a snow covered Moab. This is my final day in the area before heading back to CO to meet up some people for NYE celebration.
I brought my snowshoes on this trip with the intention of using it at RMNP. However weather in RMNP was about -18 w/ wind chill of -40 for the next few days. So I decided to look for some snow around Moab. The tourist office directed to the La Sal mountain area, and added that Geyser Pass road usually gets plowed due to the popularity of the area.
So I headed south out of Moab, found the Ken Lake turnoff and proceeded up the mountain. Visibility was about 50 yards at this point. "Hmm no sign that a plow came thru here..." I'm crawling along at 25-30mph trying to control my speed around the curves and a couple of Dodge duallies flew by me with snowmobiles in the back. Once I got up to 7500ft, the prospect of driving at 15mph for the next 13 miles on a snow covered incline with no guard rail proved too much for me to take... I turned around and went back into town.
After that epic-fail. I was determined to find some good snow.. I thought about the bike path I saw along SR128. So went out there.. put on the snoeshow and proceeded to hike along the Colorado river. Wonderful scenery, loved very minute of it.. except the damn bike path only continued for about 1/4 mile before merging with SR128.. Arrgghh..
0-2... Arches Natl Park was my next option. Really wanted to hike up Delicate Arch again but would be kind of dangerous in this weather so I went to the Devil's Garden area. The park was like an entirely different place with the fresh coat of snow. I'm so glad I was able to experience Arches in two different ways days apart.. I stayed around until darkness.
The next morning, I had breakfast at the awesome Eklectic Cafe and said goodbye to Moab.
I was really looking forward to the drive back on SR128. It did not disappoint, the scenery was sublime.
Once I exited the canyon, I was treated to a snowscape as far as the eye could see.
I got on I70 and made it to Dillon, CO later that afternoon in time for NYE celebration. The next morning, I packed up and began the 2 days drive back to Chicago. The End.
