Starlink, Google Maps, Southern Africa

Found this topic using the search function. Need help with understanding Starling. Anybody have a recommendation on where to go for basic information such as how do use or can you use Starlink to hook up google maps from an IPone for turn by turn directions? Does Starlink allow you to make phone calls using your iPhone? We return to South Africa in three weeks for another six months of driving Southern Africa. Looking for a better way to map our drives and make calls ahead to camp grounds etc. Thanks for any help you can provide.

The Direct to Cell network will expand Starlink’s vision by
providing ubiquitous connectivity and seamless access to text,
voice, and data for LTE phones and devices across the globe.
Text service begins this year, followed by voice, data, and
Internet of Things (IoT) services in 2025.

Not sure if this information is the same for the personal roaming version. Might be more specific information on a StarLink forum.

I think this is talking more about the new service that will be offered through t-mobile not the standard starlink or roaming starlink.
Current starlink works just like regular internet. Except you can take it with you. If you can make calls at home through WiFi you will be able to do it on the road. Be aware that depending on your phone provider you will still get charged for WiFi call when traveling abroad. You may be able to bypass that using a vpn.

Google maps works just like it does on any WiFi connection.

Hope this helps.

Starlink works great. I have yet, to not be impressed with it. I have a gen 3. Flat mounted.

I have not tried to use it in motion, but I know they have an option for that. And I can’t speak specifically to its use in Africa.

The Forum could possibly use a dedicated Starlink Sub thread.

It does take some juice to run. But you can get 12v conversions for it.

* Noteworthy, some countries will consider it " military hardware"

including Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Senegal, and Mali.
