Strange sound from steering column

Hello,

I recently got myself a 2003 Montero, and while it is fine, it sometimes makes a sort of "quacking" noise when it shifts from slow-to-breaking or from break-to-slow, which does not always happen and doesn't happen when the car has been driven for a while. The car does not handle any different either.

As this is harder to explain, I've recorded this sound here.

Does anyone know what this may be?

I remember reading about the common 3rd gen ABS failures that may make a similar noise. Might be something worth looking into.

As long as it is just saying "haha" and not "haha you have to replace an expensive component", I am ok with it

Thanks for the thread link, I'll investigate that and have it replaced if it's indeed the culprit.

Shame the part is a bit more expensive for a 2003, but will get it replaced. Any idea how "critical" this may be, just wondering if I can hold off on it for a while.
