SYE Advice

I am getting ready to put a SYE in my 99 XJ (4.0/AW4/NP231) and I was wanting your opinion. I have read online that it is pretty easy to do with the transfer case still installed. What have been your experiences? The SYE is a PORC.

Side Bar: I will be using a front DS in the rear when completed.

That's exactly what I used for both the SYE and driveshaft. Overall it was very easy to do.

I actually watched this video (even though it's for a TJ) as it covered most of what I had questions about. Even reference it while I was doing the conversion.

Good luck!

I also put in my SYE while the TC was still in (granted it was under a TJ). The most important thing was to purchase a good set of snap ring pliers.

I've done 2 xjs and a yj, but pulled them all. It seem easier to get the oil pump/tube to line up right when TC is sitting upright on a bench. It is also easier to get a nice clean bead of RTV. I think it's just easier than laying on the floor

 Thanks for the video Mike. When I do it I will more that likley be on a lift at the Auto Hobby shop. But I may do it in the driveway. The parts store is at the end of my street. Thanks for all your'e inputs. Worse case I'll pull it, but I am going to try and do it installed first.

Mike, What is you lift height? What is the max lift for this setup. I run an 8.8 so it should work. I'm sitting as 4.5 in the rear.

I ran the PORC SYE with the front DS in my 95 with 4.5" of lift and had no problems.

Make sure you have that damn 12-point socket for the top t-case bolt, and dont forget the magnet.

Sitting at 3" with a Chrys 8.25 rear end. Did the SYE in the vehicle. I did add shims at my leaf packs, 4* IIRC. No vibes or problems.

I replaced one in an 02 TJ. We elected to take it out even though we knew we could do it still in. It really is a piece of cake to just take it out of the vehicle and we were very happy we did in the end. On the bench is so much nicer than working over your head or on the ground. Better light and it's nice to be able to move the TC around at will!

Good luck. Not hard but but I recommend pulling it.

One step closer. I picked up a front DS today from the local pick-n-pull. It is in really good shape and I don't think the doner 97+ XJ ever went off road. $14 bones. I have all the parts I need now and just need some good weather.

P.S. If anyone needs a 231 J transfer case or AW4 transmission, there is a primo one still on that XJ at the pick-n-pull in Va Beach. Not a speck of dirt on either of them.
