did another run through Talladega National Forest, Alabama today. It's been over a year and a half since I had been back.
started at skyline drive, hopped on the motorway for a bit, then back onto dirt roads headed north through the middle of the forest.
Roads were much rougher than expected for such a tame and well groomed National Forest road system, but overall it was still very very relaxing and nice to get away from civilization. The recent rains have just really washed out some of the NF roads and made the clay logging roads (which were marked on my GPS and open this time of year for legal use) rather soggy. Roads went from pavement, to gravel, to rock, to gray mud, to red clay, then back to gravel etc etc. only 1 creek crossing which was quite shallow with a solid bottom. Had to turn around several times due to dead ends or being unable to move fallen trees from the roads which fell during the recent storms.
Saw some wildlife: pair of male eastern box turtles, wild turkey, fence lizards, anoles, and various arthropods.
It was a fun and ALL LEGAL day in the national forest. we just stayed on marked roads the whole time and drove in and out on the same tracks, not trying to tear them up any worse.
Drove a little more than 65 miles on dirt roads (including when we had to double back from dead ends or impassable/immovable road blockages).
