The G-Class has been built in Graz, Austria since 1979. 12 miles north of town, Schöckl Mountain reaches up to a height of 4800 feet. Not tall in an alpine country, but big enough to act as a test track for G-Class development.
The page link above includes a video that shows a G-Class being hustled up dirt and gravel tracks, and over granite outcrops to the summit, then diving back down, accompanied by mountain bikes. A PR puff piece to be sure, but it shows some detail of the test route.

This article from Autobild.com talks about the development of the new W464 G-Class. Its independent front suspension and new shock absorbers are credited with a 10% faster time on the descent of the Schöchl test route.
