Still my favorite.

Broad rim--shades entire face
Dark inner--reduces reflected light in eyes
Bright outer--reflects light from head
Sufficient cover of the neck--I never have a sunburned neck with this hat
Ventilated--It's never been too hot to wear this hat, even while hiking in Tucson summers
Adjustable--can fit me or my son if we forget his hat (same hat, smaller size)
Chin strap--can hang off neck when in the shade
Sweat band--eliminates sweat in eyes
Flexible and light-weight--can be stuffed into a pocket if necessary
etc., etc., etc.

Best of all? $36 retail and often closer to $20 at my local outdoor shop. I have several.

I have a Columbia like this one:

I think it's called a "Columbia Duck Key Hat"

It's great. I can roll it up and shove it in a pack or pocket, get it sweaty (and it has a good sweat band inside to keep it out of my face/eyes), get it soaking wet, wash it in a sink, wring it out. I've gotten it dirty will all sorts of stuff and it's never stained. Also, they are inexpensive (~$20) so if I were to lose it it wouldn't be a big deal.

I typically wear it with the chin strap over the top to hold the sides up, kind of like a double aussie style because I don't like to have it over my ears.

I use it a lot, and I've had it almost 7 years and I'm amazed at how we'll it's held up; it's still in great shape almost like new.

If someone were shopping for a wide brimmed hat to use outdoors, I'd recommend one of these or the Columbia Bora Bora with the net sides... or an OR hat.

I saw the Outback Kodiacs in Cabelas catalog as well as the model I have.
I wear my Outback quite a bit, it is very comfortable.

A well worn friend

My hat had accompanied me on many an adventure and is like a well worn friend, I have purchased a new one but haven't the heart to toss the old one. Some day around a fire we will have a burning ceremony and move on.

I have been using a Simms No Fly Zone Solar Sombrero as a all around in the truck hat seems good so far. I also have an Akubra that I wear for "special" events since it was passed on to me from my father in law.

Explorer 1 I know that feeling. I have several hats I can not bring myself to toss out. 2 straw cowboy hats and 1 felt. I have been debating 2 other hats and now added another to think about through this thread. Will probably still lean toward the camo stetson.

Yes, the Safari hat....

I'll be honest, I know that these aren't necessary all the time, but when I'm on hikes and generally out an about exploring on a camping or wheeling trip, these come in really handy for keeping the sun off your neck and face.

I haven't owned one in a few years and am looking for a narrow rimmed version. What brand style do you use and where can I find it online?

When I go on my make believe expeditions here at my computer I wear this one....

Sometimes though it just gets to be to much....like 15 pages of what is the best expedition hat! In those cases it is time to put on the....yes this really is a hat.

There is always a place and a time for this one though....

On a more serious note...this is my hat of choice for expeditions....it helps me blend in with the locals!

After a recent 9 days in the American Southwest where my kids absconded with my straw cowboy hats, the Tilley LT3 a raved about in January of last year in this same thread is still my favorite outdoor activity hat. I see they've dropped this one and replaced it with a version that has mesh on top. I think I prefer mine.

I also wear one of those wool crushable hats from Cabelas in the cooler weather of spring and fall. During the winter, it's a polarfleece knit cap that keeps my ears warm.

Ball caps are for town and driving and that's my normal daily wear. Once I'm out in the sun for more than a bit, the Tilley comes out.
