Around here too much flex can actually be bad sometimes because we have a lot of steep rocky hill climbs and it can cause your rig to bounce. Saw two Jeeps go up the same hill yesterday, one had long arms and 35s and it bounced up the trail. The other had like a budget boost and maybe 32s and it stayed planted better. I just want decent flex.

I agree. Although those jeeps with long arm suspension are really soft and why it was bouncing so much. I had a 2002 wrangler long ago and it was the smoothest riding vehicle offroad I've ever drove. But being on coils it felt "wiggly" on the road, like riding on jello. I'm thinking that really flexible leaf springs that are on crawlers flex so well because the springs are very soft and thin. The OME are not as soft. Going with the shock hoop will gain me more flex because the added shock length of the belstein compared to OME shocks in stock location. We will see, so far it sounds like the way I can have best of both worlds.

Well I talked to several guys who have trucks like ours but are going more toward a dedicated trail rig and they said the shock hoops and longer shocks will definitely help our OME springs out.. I'll probably order up some soon and go in that direction also.

I can't imagine getting anywhere near the amount of desired flex out of the stock suspension configuration. Longer shocks will help out a bunch with these little trucks. When/if I get mine I plan to keep it low and really flexy.

The limiting factors up front for me after the OME front packs were the brake lines--they weren't really long enough for any droop. They even got in the way of the spring installation. I went with some longer braided ones--they're too long now, but they don't limit anything (I have pieces of bike innertube bungeeing them up to the undercarriage so they don't get snagged on anything.

The OME front packs with the OME front shocks (or other shocks the right length) on the original mounting points provide quite a bit of flex up front, especially with the front anti-sway bar undone. The track bar that runs front-to-back and connects to the axle is a little bit limiting. I had a mentor of mine put a swivel in the middle of it for me. It was cut in half in the middle and then a brass, threaded fitting was brazed onto each end, with a threaded collar connecting the two. Now it still controls axle-wrap but the ends can rotate so they don't limit flex.

I agree that too much flex can be a bad thing. With the suspension systems that have crazy amounts of droop, they may keep the tire on the ground but there's so little weight on the drooping tires that that it doesn't do much good from a traction standpoint. They also often don't offer much yaw control, so they can be scary on side-hills and off-camber sections.

Cool! I've been searching on other forums for more info, but looks like no one has tried this configuration, so we will start it off! Also being $59 for the tubes is not much of a burden on the wallet. Plus the bilsteins are cheaper than the OME shocks!

That's what I'm thinking. I like the low good flex style, like a baja 1000 racer, or king of the hammers. Only thing different for me is running 31's, not 40's lol!

Good info as always. I haven't thought about the TRAC bar, and I like your way of solving it. Something I will look into for sure. And brakes lines are a must, might as well change those 31 year old lines anyways!

Flex is great when your on level ground and crawling over rocks, but here in Northeast Alabama nothing is flat. I haven't been in many situations where it would be a significant benefit for huge amounts of flex.

Thanks for your insight Tanglefoot. I'm sure Derek appreciates it as much as I do.

I dread having to measure for shocks and waiting for them to come in though! Lol

Everything east of Colorado is flat compared to out here haha jk! But I agree, traveling fire roads there's no real need for insane flex. But all the trails I've been on up here and around the sierras I've always lifted tires here and there, but then again that was in my tundra, but I feel the tundra flexed better than this little truck. I been reading, and it seems a lot of people running TG classic 3" lift are running 12" bilsteins up front, about the same lift we will get out of OME. I'll go from there.

Hmm.. This little truck flexes much better than my Tacoma did. It doesn't flex great up front but it has a few inches of down travel which is more than stock IFS. But you weren't stock in your tundra so I can see that.

I think I might measure and order, but 12" seems about right. Marlin crawler has a chart on their website for the bilsteins.

I got to ride in a linked rig the other day.. It was incredible! I've never felt anything so smooth offroad. I would love a 3-link front and 4-link rear and keep it low on 35s. $$$

Don't know if its been mentioned, but I dig the A-pillar spot light. I need one of those on my Tacoma.

I ran 31x10.5 and 33x10.5 BFGs on my 1981 Hilux. Stock gearing. Unless you are gonna regear, stick with 31s, it is night and day difference. These trucks made less than 100 hp when new. Some quality shocks and slightly larger tires will have the truck running about as good as it will get with leaf springs.
