The Status of Overlanding Today

Question, does an interest in expeditions make one an expedtionist?

For those who like to fanaticize about being on the great plains of Africa, what you need is some background noise of wild animals to play at your camp site. Monkey chatter, elephants trumpeting, a variety of bird calls with an overture of a roaring lion. Then, some light background music before bed, like Bolero

So instead of cooking the pot, you cook a rock? And the rock cooks the pot? That sounds like a waste of time to me.
What about Dutch ovens? If you have a source of heat you can cook with a Dutch oven.

I don't use the product. I was pointing out at least one problem with the product website. .. I do like dutch ovens.

Not if the rock is heated by the engine manifold as you are driving. Don't even need to wrap it in tinfoil !

Just stick your food on the engine manifold and eliminate the middle man. 🙂

I have as much crap on my camping/adventure rig as the next guy, but this pickup I spotted today, I don't get. It's a pickup, so one would think you just mount your Hi-Lift and your gas cans inside the bed sides (safer, more secure, more out of the weather). Instead he has them mounted outside the bed with some kind of brackets (and a rope?).....where they'd get totally covered in mud by those poked-out tires if ever off-road - not to mention they just don't look all that secure physically, and also easier to steal, IMO.

I get that a lot of the modern suburban "overland" rigs (including my own) have some aspect of "display your gear" to them, but when people go beyond that and sacrifice function/sensibility to do so that may tell the whole story of "overlanding" today to most of the populace. Because if your gear is stashed away securely or out of sight, do you even HAVE overlanding gear?

One of the most acclaimed travelers and all around rad dude Tom S., no bling, 32" tires, slept on cot on the ground outside, stock rig, very streamlined setup:



What is he missing? RTT, snorkel, limb risers, 35s, front bumper, rear bump, winch, roof rack, 27 LED lights and of course stickers with mountains.

That's what I generally call it when I do it.

Out East here, it just seems kind of silly to call it overlanding since lets be honest, no matter where I go I'm probably 15 minutes from a gas station or some other kind of civilization, I'm not out in the badlands (because we really don't have much of those on the east coast).

Also, spotted today out in the country...

Not entirely sure if he is "under" overland, or if it's a play on Suburban. His only visible accessory was the rusty roof rack (and the sticker) along with some M/Ts.

As a kid my family did black bear pass in a suburban very similar to that one. The only difference was the sticker and ours was a newer body style
