The Warn Pinz...

This is my old Pinz...I bought it in 2003 and only had it a couple years before I had to sell it. I wish I still had the truck, it was fun. Spent a lot of cash getting it up to par.

It is a 1975 712m that was set up for winch challenge or trophy racing. A German company set the truck up for Warn Industries in 94 and Mike Warn himself raced this in the 94 Trasylvania Trophy. The truck came with a video to document this. After the Trans. Trophy they couldn't get it in the USA since it was not 25yrs old yet. So they sold it to a guy who used it as a support vehicle in Europe and N.Africa. In 2000 it was imported to the USA by Eurotruck and was in Indiana until I bought it.

It took a lot of work and cash to get the truck in solid condition. It had been neglected for many years. The exo-cage had a built in snorkel system in it but I never got around to using it. It also had 6 Recaro racing seats and 4 aluminum tool boxes on sliders in the rear. It is an ex-Austria Pinz so a bit different than the Swiss ones if you know much about Pinzies.

It was a really fun truck, would climb anything. But the lack of suspension flex got old. I don't think I will ever own another one again. I sold it locally and as far as I know it is still around here. I put it on it's side once and the truck suffered zero damage. The exo-cage is really buff. The truck was on its side for 30-40mins and when we got it upright she started right up without blowing any smoke! Damn well built truck!! The only real prob besides suspension flex was when you got it stuck it was in really bad!

Is that the O.D. green one I see parked near Scott and SK?

No this truck has been in it's current color scheme since 1994 before it came to the USA.

The green one on Scott Lane belongs to a sheriff. I sold the Warn Pinz to the guy who owns the big ranch across the river right before you enter Hoback Canyon. IE, the stinky spot! I saw it in Jackson in 2007 but have not seen it since.

Thank you for posting the pix and links of your former Pinz. I keep hoping that by looking at lots and lots of pix of them, I can forestall buying one.

Tell us more, please. I know the Pinzgauer's independent suspension limits wheel travel. But I thought the locking diffs and, in the case of the 712 the six-wheel drive, made up for it with fantastic traction. With a wheel (or two) in the air, does the truck feel unstable?

It is just easy to flop them over on their side, even a 6x6. Mine was a soft top too so LCG. When I flopped it over I was trying to climb a steep hill in rain & mud, there was a ditch or rut on the RHS, I hit it with speed to get up the hill and over she went.

I have never driven a 4x4 Pinz but the 6x6 feels stable. It handles great on pavement and on rough flat ground you can go fast and hardly feel it. Washboard is like nothing. I had at least 10 people in the back offroading before and could hardly feel a load. The thing is on side slopes or off camber it is real easy to flip it over. Yes you can and do drive it differently than a normal 4wd. Stuff that a stock 20yr old leaf spring suspension truck laughs at feels sketchy in a Pinz. Straight up and down it will climb just about anything. Yes lifting a tire or two or even three in a 6x6 is normal! You get used to it fast and it doesn't feel sketchy. Similar to a tracked vehicle I think.

The shift on the fly 4wd and lockers is really nice. The diffs are incredibly strong having 2 ring gears. The central tube can take a serious beating and works great to slide the whole vehicle over things. The field of view is excellent since it is a forward cab. Only real probs in design would be the axle boots on the independent suspension. They can tear easy and require a lot of tear down to fix right. The split boots suck and leak, only good for a temp fix.

If I was going to do an around the world live out of the truck trip the 6x6 Pinz would be on my top 5 list of rigs to take, maybe top 3. The 6x6 is slow with top speed of 50-55mph but in 2nd & 3rd world countries no worries! Very reliable and very well built truck. I have seen fiberglass tops fitted to the 6x6 and not a radio box. They are loud though being aircooled, easy to sound deaden it. Mine never ran hot under any conditions. You would have to be able to fix just about anything on it yourself. For parts you could get anything drop shipped to you anywhere in the world but it might be a long wait! Pretty easy to work on though. I changed the clutch in mine and it was the easiest clutch I have ever done. The ZF 5spd tranny weighs like 100lbs and I dropped it out by myself in about 30 minutes.

hope that helps! :victory:

It is in good shape....I have not seen the owner driving it much around here in the last 2-3yrs. Before that he drove it a lot all summer long. I suppose with the economy things like a Pinz got to go. I guess $18k is fair but 4-6yrs ago you could have gotten a good 712 Pinz for 14-15k.

I hope it finds a good home locally.

I thought I would share this since this thread is about the truck....

http://www.warn.com/blog/2011/12/14/the_warn_pinzgauer.shtml

Thanks to Andy for the credit on the pictures and doing a nice job on the write up!! I actually still have VHS video of the 94 Trans Trophy that came with the Warn Pinz. It is not the original though as I sent that with the truck when I sold it, I did make some copies of the 94 Trans Trophy video though that featured both Mike Warn and the Warn Pinz. I have not watched the video in yrs but used to watch it all the time. I might have to fire up the old VHS machine and see if the video still look as cool to me as it once did. ;)

To see some pictures of the Pinzie's I may have mentioned....

You can see the fiberglass top 712 as well as a flat bed 712. Sean who owns and runs Eurotruck is the guy who imported my old Warn Pinzgauer. He used to focus on importing and the Pinz + Mogs much more. Now it seems he focuses on the G-Wagons. He is a super nice guy though and very well traveled + experienced. The "rock crawler" Mog you see in the gallery he actualy shipped to Croatia and then raced it in the Croatia Trophy.

Oh and there is a bunch of pictures of some other super sweet Mogs in there too! ;)

I went and bought this truck back! The folks I sold it to let me drive it around their ranch last weekend. After that I just couldn't stop thinking about the Pinzie. So on Monday I made them an offer, by Friday, they had accepted my offer.

So this old friend is coming home. :D

I will use this thread to post info and pictures of the truck in the coming months. I plan to get out in it as much as possible over the next 2-4 months. Camping, off-roading and just good ole' fun. I don't really plan to do a lot of work to the truck, just some little things here and there. I also don't really plan to own it long-term but who knows.

Cheers
