The Warn Pinz...

Last night I came across my old file on the truck, I thought I had sent it with the truck when I sold it but I guess not. Going through the file, geez I spent a lot and put a lot into this truck! So many things were fixed, repaired and or replaced. No wonder it still runs so good!

Here are a bunch of pictures I took of the truck last weekend. It still looks just like it did when I sold it. As far as I have been told it has hardly been used at all the last 5yrs and has been stored indoors for the better part of the last 9yrs.

always wanted one, but I thought maintenance would be a nightmare

Other than lot's of fluids not really. Engine is a 4-cyl. so not much to that. But the axles and portal boxes take a lot of oil. SAV (Swiss Army Vehicles) has just about all parts in stock. Some things are really expensive like a new OEM wiper motor but others are not.

Oh and I just figured out the truck did just under 3,000 miles from 02 when I first got it until now. Most of that was probably put on it by me! I found a picture of the speedo right after I got the Pinz yrs ago and compared it to a picture I took a few weeks ago, 3,000 miles is it! So all the parts I put into the truck like new brake drums and shoes, tires, lot's of seals, axle boots, ect ect are still like new! :)

First thing I did when I got it home was slap my plates on it, check the oil and take it for a 35 mile drive. 1/3 of that high speed on gravel roads. Then I spent 5hrs detailing the truck, it was dirty! After that I drove it out to dinner with a buddy. After dinner we did a night run 4wd trail. I rallied the Pinz super hard, it loved every minute of it. Total miles today, over 150 and about 75 of that off-road in dirt and gravel in 4wd. Our night run was high speed dirt roads with lot's of wash board and whoops. We also did some water stuff. The Pinz loved it all and runs super good.

I am really enjoying it! :D

Well I have had a good first day with the truck. Pretty happy all around. I like to run a truck hard, real hard after I get it to see what may be an issue or need work. I am happy to say I ran the Pinz very hard yesterday and it didn't miss a beat. Not only that but I felt very awkward driving it the first hour or so and now it is like the muscle memory has returned. I am driving it very well and enjoying the hell out of it!

Here is a few more pictures

The new ex-Swiss cab/tub. I think this came from a 710K body that was chopped up to make a 712DK.

Now after the first day or two with the truck I have a solid list of things I want to do.

-change all fluids and engine oil.
-new oil pan gasket.
-fix the wipers, I sure hope that doesn't mean a new wiper motor, OEM is $750!!
-buy one new 33" Bogger. Front tires are getting kind of beat, spare has never been on the ground. So buy one new tire, use the spare and use one of the beat fronts as a spare. Probably also powder coat red front rims black.
-some new bulbs in the tail lights
-little bit of weatherstripping in the doors
-fix the broken door retainer or stop, sorry don't know exactly what it is called without looking it up!
-check and change air filter if required, new rubber bases for air filter housing to carbs.
-install some Hella H4 headlights, it already has H4 bulbs but the headlight housings are ugly and show rust on the inside.
-buy & install a Hella 24v work light out the back for camping.
-buy & install some small 24v LED lights in the cab.
-fix the e-brake, could be minor or major.
-replace a cracked front turn signal cover
-fix leak at top of fuel tank. I had forgotten about this but when the tank is filled to the rim it will dump 1-2 gallons on the ground. Just need a new seal or two for the fuel tank. I am also now sure the fuel tank (Austrian and bigger than most) is right around 25 gallons. After 150ish miles it is still over half full. This is important stuff to know my range!
-Pull out the Espar and start playing wit it. Try to determine what it needs to work right.

Going through my old file on the Pinz this evening and looking at the receipts from 2004 and here is a lot of what I see we did to the truck at that time;

-new clutch, all of it including a new push rod in the slave cylinder
-1/2 or more of the 5sp shifter linkage replaced
-new brake switch light
-new master cylinder
-all new brake shoes and drums, OEM
-repair wheel cylinder
-3 new hub seals
-Petronix kit into dizzy
-4 new limiting straps, on the rear
-new TD (yellow) coil springs in front
-6x Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks
-crank shaft pulley seal
-new fire rings in header pipe
-oil temp gauge VDO, tapped at oil cooler
-2x new exhaust manifold gaskets
-new locker light, clean, flush & repair locker switches.
-new muffler and tail pipe
-new prop shaft, trans to t-case
-new turn signal switch
-new wiper blades and adapter
-starter motor rebuild
-new windows sewn in canvas
-x2 new one piece axle boots
-x1 new axle seal
-new knuckle ball seals
-new fan belt
-new steering damper Rancho
-used but good battery boxes and tool box
-x5 new ball joints
-x1 windshield replaced with safety glass, it is a split windshield, aka Austrian. other side wasn't replaced.
-VDO tach install
-new TD tail lights
-new mud flaps
-x7 Interco Boggers in 33x10.5R16

And I know there was more! But that is on the receipts I have.

Cheers

Glad to hear you are enjoying it! Great truck!

The spare pinz body you have is not from a "K" model (Kabin) as it would have a pair of door openings where the cut was. To make the 712DK/M they took a 710K (4x4) and a new swiss surplus 712M (6x6) body base/frame - they cut off the back end of both the 712M and 710K and welded the back of the 712M to the front of the 710K.

I was under the impression it was cut right in front of the doors. I don't really know though, just a hunch.

Just got back from a day/night out in the Pinz. Lot's of fun but I left the camera at home. :(

Carnage from the trip =

-two rear axle boots are cracked. They are simply old and worn out, cycling the suspension a lot caused them to crack. Going to order up two new one-piece boots and tackle the job.

-t-case input seal leaking. It was weeping before but now it is leaking. Easy fix.

-a few electrical demons showed up. Likely my own doing as I was working on the TD tail lights for hours before the trip. So now I need to deal with the wiring and get it in order.

That is about it, looks like I need to order some parts from SAV!

Cheers

is there an online version of that transylvania trophy hiding away somewhere? looks like it'd be a cool watch

I don't think so on the 94 video being online to watch. But if somebody finds it post a link!!!

I got a box of parts yesterday for the truck. Here is what I am doing to it....

-fuel pump rebuild, not giving me probs just doing it for the heck of it.
-all new gaskets, fill hose and seals for top of the fuel tanks. Currently leaks gas when it is full to the rim.
-t-case input seal.
-trans shifter seals and gasket at trans. Full rebuild kit and parts for trans linkage.
-new door (drivers) window channel.
-two new door stops, already installed.
-oil pan gasket and oil filters.
-new fuel filter.
-two new one-piece axle boots.
-a few other small random parts.

I had no luck getting the axle splitter tool from Expedition Imports, I had hoped to rent the tool from them. So planning to buy a hydraulic ram kit today at Harbor Freight and use that to split the axle needing new boots. If this is a fail, I will just fab my own tool to split the axles. Spent a bit of time testing the wiper motor last night, definitely have power to the motor so the prob is in the motor. Pulled it out of the truck and it seems a bit dirty and kind of seized. Going to see if I can't clean it up and get it working before I spend the cash on replacing it.

BTW, my buddy picked up an 86 king-cab Toyota truck recently for $700. It is a super solid truck, even has the r151 5spd but it has a blown head gasket and possibly a cracked head. We are taking it to the machine shop today in Idaho. $2600 later and he will have a brand new motor. So for not much over $3k he has a sweet truck with a brand new 22re!

Cheers
