time for tires for my 04 Unlimited.

best tire for my LJ unlimited? its an unlifted, often heavily loaded rig.

-30x9.50.15 stockers on right now. could go to a 31 w/ no problem...
-need good highway manners as its a DD/expo rig
-want strong sidewalls
-want more aggressive tread than the AT/S's i have now.
-might consider 16's if i can find a nice set of wheels/tires cheap...

here's some idea's
-BFG AT's
-Dunlop mud rover's
-high tech retreads in AT or AT/MT...(i've run the MT's before = loud)
-Super swamper SSR's

thanks all.

p.s. remember this rig is staying unlifted other that maybe some higher spring rate rears.

You have a variety of tires there from AT to SSR. The Super Swampers are going to wear fast and not like the hwy like an AT.
I don't think they are in 15" but the Nitto Terra Grabber is a good AT to look at.

I'd stick with ATs if it's going to be a daily driver. I've gone the AT to MT then back to AT route. The MTs are nice looking but I'm on pavement most of the time so I decided an AT is the best for me. I've had BFG in the past and think they are a great tire. I've also had Bridgestone Dueler AT revos, also great and I currently am running Firestone Destination ATs, also a great tire. You can't go wrong with any of those tires so I'd go with the one you could get the best deal on. I got my Firestones out the door for $540, 265/75 R16 load range C.

i dig the sentiment towards BFG's...i can get them at costco for $530 out the door, in 31" x 10.5 x 15

or in 30" x 9.5 x 15 (original size) for $500.00

that seems like a good option...

BFG A/T should do ya nicely. 31-10.50-15 would be my choice, especially if you roll around in sand.

I wish they'd make a 31-9.0-15, which would be a perfect TJ/LJ tire in snow country, but no luck.

Well, if you go to a 16" wheel, 245/75-16 fits that bill. I'm running this size in a Bridgestone Dueler REVO. Great tire and the size works great as there is no rubbing on the control arms, which is an issue with stock offset wheels and a 10.50 width tire.

BFG AT's for me. i am on my second set on both jeeps. with proper rotation i got 90,000 miles out of each set.

Hey

On a Jeep CJ I had 33 X 12.5 x 15 BFG A/T's....good tires, rain/snow. On a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee I have the 245/70/16 BFG long trails and am very happy. On my 94 Chevy Suburban I just put on a set of 235/85/16 Hankook dynapro M/T's (32") and am very happy with overall ride, noise, and mud capability, esp. on such a heavy vehicle as my sub and they were only $145 a piece including mounting and balancing. I'm happy enough that when I put new tires on the 99 Grand they will be the 245/75/16's Hankook M/T's unless I get a lift then I will go up one size. I like the heavy lugged side wall they have, which should be good when aired down and they seem good on wet pavement/snow. Obviously I can't speak for how they will do when they have 20,000 miles on them.

I'll have to disagree (not saying you did not have good luck with them) with the Long Trails. I have had both, Long Trails and Rugged Trails (as well as A/T) from BFG. Long Trails are great if you do 95% street driving and 5% fire roads. They suck in the sand and soft dirt. Rugged Trails are in between Long Trails and A/T's but still don't work nearly as well as A/T's.

For the money, A/T's are hard to beat. I would most likely have them but they do not make a 245/75-16 in a C rated tire, only D and E rating. Too stiff for a light Cherokee. I did not want to change my 16" wheels to 15" as I really liked the design of them.

Keep an eye out for a set of Rubicon take offs. I still find them, actually found a set for $300 with about 40% tread. Seen ones with 80% tread for about $600. If I did not have 8 current wheels (4 on XJ, one as spare, 3 for trailer), I would get a set of Rubi Moab's in a heartbeat. :shakin:

Hey

XJ mike, your absolutely right about the long trails, this vehicles has been used mostly on the road and is my daily driver, they did do fairly well in snow. As I mentioned before, when I get ready to replace them, I will be getting the hankook M/T's since I have a new endeavor for my Grand besides daily driver. The long trails were good but I want MORE! LOL

Hey Brian,

Someone posted this on NAXJA and I thought you might be interested.

I know you said you did not like your current wheels so this might be a good way to change them and get some tires at the same time.

BTW, your PM box is full as I tried to PM you this info.

Good luck. :costumed-smiley-007

Also, check out Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10. They have them in 31x10.5x15.

This is the tire I will most likely get for my Titan.
