This 07 FJ was never much of a daily driver - always been my off road toy and for the last 3 years a tow vehicle for our travel trailer. It only has 38kmi on it, but these were rather hard miles. This rig has been to Moab, did the Rubicon trail, the sand dunes and a lot of desert runs. I was one of the people who were extremely bummed out about the inner fender rail cracks (happened at 3500miles!!!!). I was very frustrated with Toyota Corporate about how they handled the case - basically leaving you stranded. As the cracks kept growing to a point where everything just keep rattling and falling apart, I knew it was time to get serious. The final straw was as the motor mounts cracked out of the frame and punctured the bottom end of the engine...
I met Jeremy at WeldTech earlier this year and I did a first test project with him - the weld-on rear bumper with hitch integration. I am very picky about how things should be done, and I can only say one thing: he did an AMAZING JOB! So it was clear for me that he is my man to do the entire roll cage with. The FJ is a tricky vehicle to do this on properly, but again, Jeremy and his team are just fantastic of how they put this together. I completely trust him every step of the way, and this is coming from someone who is considered a "control enthusiast"

Now I just hope Jeremy is not reading this comment, otherwise I don't have any room for negotiating the final price!!!!
So what is the plan with Smurf Jacob: I like to go fast but I also have rock crawling. for me, the weakest link was the front suspension (I had a 3in Donahoe Racing lift kit), as I like to go a bit faster through the desert. So that was tackled with the Total chaos 3.5in long travel suspension and the King shocks. this setup is for sure not as ideal for rock crawling anymore but that's ok - I got a winch and it needs to be used. The roll caging is to limit the flex of the ladder frame against the body, which was the root cause for the inner fender rail cracking. Yes, safety is an added value, but I don't have the plan to roll him... To give him the proper look, I will install a single piece fiberglass front end (lights and grill integrated). I pieced this together from the individual fiberglass hood and fender available on the market. The plan is to use the original hood mounts to open the entire piece - this should give nice access to the engine compartment for any repair if necessary.
I will also re-gear him to 4.88 (from 3.73) to compensate for the added weight and bigger tires (33in). Drifting in the canyons was only good in low gear, but I was running out of rpm. So hopefully the 4.88 gives me enough umpf to have fun in high gear. I still need to get someone eliminate stability control and all that BS in high gear. At some point I may put on 35s. Beside the re-gearing, the rear axle stays for now. Wanna play with him first and then decide on the details. Most likely I will get a 7in wider axle housing (probably Diamond), but no decision yet on 4-linking or not. As I said, I wanna feel it out first...
On the interior I want to put individual panels inside the cage to make him nice and pretty and this also allows me easy access for installing overhead switched, lights, speakers and so on. That way I don't even need to mess with cutting and fitting the old interior panels. The cage gets painted in silver. The dash will remain stock. Since there is not enough room for the original seat bench in the back, I just ordered a couple of Corbeau FX1 bucket seats (hopefully I made the right decision on these). I may switch the front ones out too, but for now I will keep them as they are quite comfortable for me.
Ok, now back to making some money so I can pay Jeremy...
